I booked for my husband, daughter and I to stay for two nights as part of a mini break between Christmas and New Year. |Unfortunately, my husband was unwell over the Christmas period and unable to make it, so it was just my 12 year old daughter and I. |I booked through Booking.com and was able to easily change our room from a superior double (with sofabed) to a twin, saving myself around £30.||We were met with a very warm, friendly welcome upon arrival and shown to our room, up on the top floor in the attic.||What a beautiful, charming room - spacious, clean, cosy, comfortable and warm, with all the old English rustic charm you'd expect from a building of this age in a quaint Somerset village!||We got settled and went down into the pub area for dinner. Again, we received a really friendly welcome and great service.|The pub itself is very pretty and was "dressed up" for the festive season.|Our drinks order was promptly taken and delivered - the range of non-alcohol beer, cider, and cocktails is pretty good, better than most pubs, and very welcome, as I don't drink, but like an alternative "grown up" option.||Our meals were ordered, some options were off-menu, but they were fully booked, so this was unsurprising.|I chose the lamb shank and my daughter the macaroni cheese, which arrived in good time considering how busy they were, hot, really delicious and with very pleasant service! The same with desserts (sticky toffee pudding with custard and chocolate brownie) - prompt, delicious and nothing was too much trouble!||We had a very comfortable night's sleep, a bit too comfortable as we were almost late for breakfast! However, we were accommodated and looked after really well but a really lovely lady, whose name I didn't catch. |Breakfast choices are excellent and we both plumped for the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, which was, again, delicious! The chef deserves a special mention too, because every meal we had (two evening meals, two desserts and two breakfasts) were really lovely! |We had another relaxing, comfortable night and left for a great day out in nearby Bath after breakfast on New year's eve, before heading home to Kent. ||The pub was in an excellent location for our planned trip to Longleat too, which was absolutely magical! |An excellent, warm, cosy accommodation with a gorgeous team of staff, delicious food and drink, and a fab location - so good, I've already booked again for my daughter's birthday in March! |Special mention to Justine for her excellent, professional and...
Read moreWent here on mother's day and ended up waiting for 2 hours, with no offer of any complimentary food or drink to keep us going which was a problem for my diabetic grandad, only for a member of staff to tell us that it would be 20 minutes longer at which point I walked back to Frome because I couldn't face waiting any longer. Won't ever be returning to the pub again even with a change of ownership I'm sure the place would still remind me of what was till this day the worst service I've received in my life. Even going through Beckington I still get annoyed just thinking about it which ruins what would be such a nice place. Not to mention it was on mother's day which made things worse because not only did it ruin my day and week as a whole but it ruined it for my mum which is what mattered. Unless you're into waiting literally hours for overpriced, average food that's made to look all contemporary and niche alongside poor customer service I would highly recommend avoiding what has become my least favorite place in the country. I don't even eat out anymore in fear that I may experience something similar elsewhere. I may sound like exaggerating but PLEASE avoid this place. Also I know it's very late considering it's now November but until this point I didn't even want to type the name of the pub into a search engine in fear of smashing up my phone from the unforgettable bad memories I have of this absolute hellhole. I would prefer to slice off my own tounge, and try and eat that, than buy something to eat...
Read moreOn the last day of our trip, we decided to stop here for a bit of lunch before leaving.
I honestly wish we hadn't.
Firstly, the good - We didnt have a booking, and were sat down very quickly, the server came straight over and took our drinks and food order. When my wife wanted to change her drink order, it was dealt with really well. The soup was nice Our bill was amended after complaining with no issues
Now, the bad - They didn't have the pretty standard bottled beer I ordered. Also, the meal I ordered wasn't available and neither was my sons - we both changed to something that they had. We then waited for well over 45 minutes for our food, when it arrived, my sons Hunters Chicken ( although tasty ) had no cheese on it and the corn on the cob was literally frozen - I mean straight out of the freezer. My burger tasted nice, but the edges of the bun were like concrete. At no stage did anybody come over to us and apologise for the long wait we had. These aren't things that should happen, but even worse when we have waited 45 minutes for it. Also very disappointed that when we advised of our issues, that the manager didn't come to speak to us, instead leaving our server to sort it out. I fully accept this was Bank Holiday Monday and some things may be out of stock, but had we realised the wait would be so long and the issues we would have with the food, we wouldn't have stayed. Not somewhere we will be...
