We might have been unfortunate based on previous reviews however our experience of this place was not good. We booked this place as the final night for a 40th birthday celebration.
We were left standing for 10 minutes without a single acknowledgement from any member of staff despite them passing many times.
We had initially placed a drinks order but after 20 minutes of waiting they hadnât arrived so another member of staff re-took the order and they arrived 5 minutes later.
After 40 minutes of being seated we had our food order taken. 2 Beach house chicken wings and a small Catch mussels for starters alongside a childrenâs flatbread pizza and chips. For mains we ordered 2 Steak Frites, 1 Surf &Turf and a catch meat pizza (with no tomato sauce) with a portion of fries.
We were asked about allergies and intolerances and shared one person has a tomato intolerance (wings and pizza) and one had an allergy to coriander (wings and surf/turf.)
Childrenâs flatbread pizza came as an over baked tortilla wrap with pure tomato pure and cheese. When trying to cut it broke into pieces as it was that brittle and the cheese just peeled with one bite. Even the hungry 8 year old said he didnât want it!
Chicken wings starters came out with all 4 wings at a different temperature ranging from fridge cold to piping hot initially served on a plate with salad leaves. We sent them back, receiving no apology from the staff member. When they returned were now served in a bowl, still at varying temperatures but now with coriander sprinkled over the top of both portions despite us making them aware of the allergy. We didnât eat them and had to ask for them to be taken off the bill at the end, with no objection as they clearly knew it wasnât a good experience.
Between courses as asked three times for a drinks menu with it only coming on the last time.
At this point we seriously considered cancelling mains and grabbing fish and chips from somewhere else!
When the mains arrived the pizza described as âhand stretched sourdough pizzaâ looked to be a bought-in standard pizza base (it was perfectly round and flat.) The steaks were missing the their onion rings and we had to ask about the portion of chips as it didnât come initially.
Ours unfortunately wasnât the only party with issues, with the tables around us also experiencing problems with food being raw, it taking over an hour for just starters to arrive (and then having to be sent back) and others also having components missing from their orders that had to come separately.
In addition to all that the toilets were in an appalling state, one having no means of drying your hands and the other having a mess all over the floor!
Even when paying the bill and asking for the chicken wings to be removed (which they didnât quibble) there was still no offer of anything additional to compensate us for the bad experience.
At one point we joked we would be appearing on a comedy show with the number of tables...
Read moreOVERRATED. Maybe we came on a bad day, but the high expectations we had from other reviews weren't met at all. Two adults, one kid and a dog. My wife had the half lobster and she said it was lovely, but apart from that it was average at best....for the price. I hate to say it as overall they were lovely people running the place. But......
It's all about basic things and then the details. This is where I now sound like an ar*e but for ÂŁ140+ for two adults and a kid even the basic stuff wasn't met which is what matters.
We arrive at the entrance in the pouring rain the host is there at the door using the ordering system computer. She is trying to fix something with one of the servers and leaves us standing in the rain getting soaked. Eventually we are noticed but it is obvious we are not aloud in through the door until it is confirmed we have a booking, even though basic decency would be to offer us a quick shelter from the rain.
We are seated and our drinks order taken, no worries.
Rare steak was overcooked because the sirlion cut is too small to cook the way they did it. I'm not a chef and even I know that. Kids pasta sauce was just straight passata with no flavour. Dessert, sticky toffee pudding was a dry brick floating in a huge amount of sauce. If it isn't a nice soft sponge, don't serve it. You can't mask it with extra sauce. That just tells you they are trying to palm you off with food that they know isn't good. The moijito was just rum and water. No brown sugar, limes weren't crushed and the mint wasn't ripped. If you make one like that you will never taste the sweet sugar, sharp lime and hit of mint, which is what that drinks is all about, and if you are charging ÂŁ9 for it then I would expect the barman to know the basics of that. Before asking how we would like to pay they asked if we wanted to leave a tip which is rude. Four seperate people served us with big waits between exchanges so no idea who the tip goes too. Then to finish off, our table was being cleared and cleaned as we put our coats on as if we were getting there way. Toilets were all broken and the cleaning sign left in the hallway. I could see into the kitchen from our table the floor was filthy and the bins out back a mess.
All the nice decor doesn't mean anything if you can't cook or clean properly.
I don't like writing reviews like this but lots of the reviews were really misleading and I want your expectations to be realistic when spending hard earned money here as I felt robbed by the experience to be honest.
Such easy things to fix it all too which just shows laziness in my opinion.
We went to the Merrymoor next door and had a lovely quality meal for half the price and the people were great too.
Apologies again for sounding like an ar*e but it's always best...
Read moreMy wife and I visited this seafood restaurant during a weekday lunchtime. It was fairly busy despite being mid week and out of season although we did not have to book. The restaurant is in a great location and stylish inside. I'm sure that booking is essential in season. My recollection is that the menu outside did not match the menu provided inside and lobster was not available. The 'Catch of the Day' was pollock rather than haddock and the grilled catch was plaice. There was a dish of mixed seafood but it was described as containing mussels prawns, squid and a rather vague 'white fish.' I chose the seafood linguine (£17) and my wife had the lemon sole on a bed of peas, olives and mash (£18) from the specials menu. I can say that the linguine was well presented with squid, whole prawns and mussels but the squid was really chewy. The sauce was delicious but presented in a lukewarm bowl. My wife enjoyed hers although she did comment that the single fillet was small and even though she has a tiny appetite she was far from full. My overall impression from the menu and food available was that this restaurant is not supplied daily with a variety of freshly caught seafood as one would expect in France but plays safe with squid, mussels, prawns and 'white fish.' This may be more of a criticism of the British apathy with seafood than the restaurant itself. Overall I guess that I was expecting more but 4-stars because I enjoyed what I had and the restaurant benefits from a...
