Wow! Had the absolute pleasure of dining here for lunch with a friend yesterday and I have to say I will definitely be back! So many dishes to try out… the menu is well thought out. We tried the lamb chukka, prawn masala, non-veg thali and the poori and I have to say it was truly an authentic experience. At the recommendation of the waiter, I found the lamb chukka to be most delicious- the flavours of the spices used, the tender-roasted lamb, whole semi-opened cardamom pods, fresh curry leaves - a true flavour explosion! The prawn masala, although lacking in masala, with the expectation of heat…it was delicious enough with a coconut cream based curry gravy and plump prawns. And the thali came with a chicken curry with similar curry gravy as the prawn, so it was also not spicy, a truly authentic dholl, and a very tasty aubergine curry accompanied by fluffy basmati rice, a roughly sliced red onion and grated carrot salad, and a soft drink. We had opted to have poori as the bread with our meal and this was served as delicious fluffs of soft bread to mop up the yummy gravy. Seeing how we were enjoying it all, the waiter asked if we’d like to try some paratha and boy did this not disappoint! …fresh, flaky pastry-style bread which is definitely a must order with your meal! I was dying to try the payasam, but because I was running late and we had spent too much time enjoying the ambiance of this restaurant, I didn’t have the time. I can seriously recommend Houseboat Restaurant in Derby for an amazing menu with lots of delicious flavour, great service and many, many options to suit all tastebuds. See you soon! PS. I forgot to take pictures but I promise to do...

This is one of the nicest Indian restaurants I have ever had the pleasure to eat in. I went with my partner early on a Friday evening for context.
I started with a Malabar mojito, which was a delicious variant on a mojito, with chillis and mango. The flavours were very well-balanced.
For our food, I had the chilli paneer to start, my partner had the chicken chukka. Mine was cubes of paneer in a chilli sauce made with peppers, garlic and chillies (obviously), and I can highly recommend it. It was warm, but not spicy. My partner's chicken chukka was also very tasty.
For our mains, I chose the boatman's fish curry, as I am partial to a fish curry. My partner had the chicken roast. Both were exceptional. My fish curry had a good level of spice and a very nice flavour profile, if you like a tomato-based gravy.
We had parathas on the side that were so flaky and great for mopping up the sauce (honestly, it was the only thing stopping me from licking the plate).
For dessert we had a banana fritter each (dessert of the month), which just finished the meal off nicely with it's warm sweetness.
I rounded up with a masala tea which was brewed and blended so well I plan on popping in for a cup of tea at some point.
The service was so friendly and attentive, the staff were completely on hand to talk about the menu and make suggestions and recommendations. They are clearly so proud of what they have put together here, as well they should be. Make sure you pop by this place as...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of visiting House Boat Restaurant with a group of friends, and it was an experience to remember.
From the moment we walked in, we were amazed by the grand décor and the hand-painted wall murals that tell the story of the connection between Derby and Kerala, India. The inclusion of classic Rolls Royce and Ambassador cars within the murals was a nice touch, adding to the unique charm of the restaurant.
Situated in the heart of Derby city Centre, this restaurant offers authentic South Indian dishes. We ordered a variety of dishes including pal parotta, beef dry fry, chicken lollipop, appam, and fish stew, to name a few. The food arrived quickly and was beautifully presented. Each dish tasted amazing, with rich flavors and perfect seasoning. The restaurant also has a menu for kids, making it a great option for families.
The service was exceptional, with friendly and attentive staff who ensured we had a wonderful dining experience. They were knowledgeable about the menu and provided excellent recommendations.
Parking: There is ample parking nearby, and we parked at NCP Babington Street, which offers a reduced price of £1.90 after 5 pm for 10 hours. This added convenience made our visit even more pleasant.
Overall, our experience at House Boat Restaurant was fantastic. We will definitely be...
