Sundays are for carvery’s. That’s my ultimate rule.
My partner chose this one as we’d never been before and the reviews were fab from recently. So we booked. Upon arrival the atmosphere was dreadful , all the customers looked like they were forced to be there , the staff looked like they couldn’t be bothered and they were half dressed. Had a company T-shirt on but had scruffy bottoms and scruffy shoes on like they’ve just started their shift after a run in the woods.
We both got a carvery , from recent reviews they looked fab but I was greeted with a lack of sides like vegetables, do you guys change up which veg you use weekly? There were only options for veg were carrots and swede together and some peas. As an autistic person I don’t like food touching at the best of times and I was not prepared to hold the line up picking carrots out of the swede. It’s just not an inviting carvery setting for my liking. The lady serving the carvery didn’t look happy either i dont know why but she didn’t have a nice demeanour about her.
I also can’t understand why you’ve upped your prices as a lady on here said she paid £9 for a carvery about a month ago and I paid nearly £25 for two traditional carveries. Dont get me wrong the meat was freshly cooked and carved & delicious but the rest were boring and undercooked I left most of it and left the premises feeling like I’ve wasted money.
I personally would rather be overwhelmed with choice rather than underwhelmed.
I can’t make a judgement on the rest of the food or desserts because we didn’t have any. But if you want a carvery I wouldn’t come here. Stick to somewhere like sycamore farm.
Sorry to be THAT kind of reviewer , but it was an awful atmosphere and a few changes are highly needed in my opinion - ( I’m a ex manager of...
Read moreThis is a big venue, lots of space for families and kids. It has a good kids menu, including drinks and is a super place for families.
We came here when our kids were small, some 30 years ago, and it has been managed by many companies since. Some good, some not so much. But now it is run by Stonehouse and it is more professional than I have seen it before.
There is a big car park and step-free access for wheelchairs. Some of the seating area has steps, but most is on the level
There is a varied menu, both the meat and the veg on the carvery were good quality and nicely cooked. The allegen menu is via the Glass Onion app, which is not the easiest to follow.
My wife had a traditional carvery at £9.29 which is good value in anybodies money, and I had a meat feast calzone pizza which should have been £13.79 but was £6.90 because of the Tursday deal.
The apple pie and custard was amazing, traditional like your mum used to make, real pieces of apple, not a canned mush.
There is a good choice of beer and wine, I drank Wolfbass Chardoney for just over £15 a bottle, it is well kept and a reasonable price.
Thanks to the magic of name badges, I can say that I was served by Amy and Jordan who were pleasant and helpfull; and by the magic of asking questions I can say that my pizza was made by Liam, and my wife's carvery by Lisa. It is staff that make the difference between "good" and "exceptional".
The cell phone reception is poor, but there is free Sky Wifi if you are prepared to put personal details into the app, Then you can order food and drinks from your table.
When we visited it was mid-week and so lots of free space. If I was coming Saturday or Sunday I would book, you can do...
Read moreWe came here this evening, (traveling 15 miles) after having a great meal at a Crown Carvery a few years ago. I have to say the food was great, meat was tender and all piping hot. The carvery chef was really happy and chatty, and is a credit to the business. That’s where it ends however... You find a table and order at the bar... not a problem, but was abruptly informed “you can’t open a table with a card because the manager banned it from people walking out” - if you take their card details to open a table, you can still take a payment if they do a runner. Both the girl serving the bar and the female manager on shift just had sheer arrogance - informing me (at 8.40) we’d “have to order food quick”. Ordered our food straight away and went to carvery. After deciding we fancied desserts, we went to order at the bar and told by the manager we couldn’t because “they’ve closed the kitchen entirely” (this was 9.10 - website states kitchen service until 9.30). When ordering our carvery we mentioned that we were looking at desserts because we had a discount voucher for the entire meal, and were not advised of this at the time, otherwise we would have ordered them then. No one checked to see how our food was. Both the male and female toilets were disgusting, and the disability distress alarm cord was tied up in the male toilets. We went home and had dessert elsewhere where the service was pleasant. As far as Crown Carveries go, the food is still good value, but the service is the key, and wouldn’t recommend this...
