“INDIAN GEM IN THE SPEN VALLEY” Reviewed 27 July 2012 If you only try one Indian Restaurant in the Spen Valley, make sure it's Samarkand (affectionately known as Sammy's) in Heckmondwike. This restaurant was established over 25 years ago by Sammy Laher and is known by everyone in the area. The food is delicious authentic Asian cuisine with recipes produced by Sammy's wife, Julie. The atmosphere is very friendly, with the recently refurbished ground floor providing a modern airy space where everyone is welcomed by the owners and staff. First floor can be used for large parties. The restaurant is family run with son Rahil now taking on much of the responsibility for front of house while Julie still oversees the kitchen. Oh, and don't forget to bring your own wine/beer as although Sammy's has no alcohol licence they are more than happy to provide glasses etc. for customers to enjoy their own. We try to visit once a week and have taken many friends and family who have all been as impressed as us. The chicken tikka has been voted the best ever by our expert - Jacqui's brother, Andrew - who has tried the dish in numerous restaurants, whilst we strongly recomend the Kahari dishes and even the Chilli Chicken if you're prepared to be adventurous. Read moreWe love sammies. We’ve tried loads of local curry houses but always come back here as it’s the best one! The fish masala starter is beautiful, the salads are always fresh, the naan breads are the best around and the curries are super tasty with gorgeous large pieces of really top quality and perfectly cooked chicken. We particularly like the creamy chicken (my daughter’s fave) and the chicken and spinach karahi. Everything is always lovely, even down to the poppadoms and pickle tray 🤩 Staff are always really friendly and service is always excellent, they even gave us a lift up the road when the streets were full of black ice when we walked down for my birthday meal. Lovely and warm too which is always nice when the weather is...
Read moreWow! Massively overrated, I am actually quite shocked at how poor quality both our curries were from such a place that's been there for years and has such a loyal following, im not sure if any of them have tried curries from other places in Heckmondwike but it's not hard to find a better one. The meat in curry was so tough it had to be cut into small pieces to be chewed, and I'm not a pensioner! The only plus side was the chicken was quite nice in my wife. Both were very untradtional in flavour and consistency and swimming in water when put on plates to eat. Given 2 stars instead of one because it did come quickly, but won't order here again, also quite expensive...
