My wife and I have just returned from sunday lunch at the Dog and Partridge, Bare. We have used the pub quite a few times over the course of the summer, and had always found it to be good value for money and reflecting acceptable standards of service.
Today has taught us that you cannot depend on pubs such as this to be consistent in their approach to customer service, an essential part of the pub food "package". So what let this pub down, seeing as we had previously had scant reason to find fault with its presentation of this "package"?
Firstly staff awareness of customers' needs; although it is the end of summer, I would still expect bar staff to know how to prepare and serve a Pimms and lemonade. Customers should not have to remind staff that the essence of a Pimms is the fruit cup. This means rather more than the slices of lemon and lime (not a dash of lime cordial), but with the addition of apple, orange, strawberries, cherries and mint leaves. The Pimms served today was yellow in colour and had only a slice of lemon and a slice of lime.
Secondly when staff inform the customer that desserts may be ordered through them (as opposed to standing up and going at the bar yourself), they should ensure that the order is placed. It took 35 minutes today to serve one apple pie and ice cream and a syrup sponge pudding and ice cream (a microwave pudding takes less than one minute, and this was not anything else).
Thirdly when staff are asked by the customer whether or not the pudding has been correctly ordered, they should (if the order has not been placed) reply to the fact that a) a mistake. Then to say the order "was on the way", when in fact it duly arrived 7 minutes later!!! All in all a total irritation.
Fourthly staff should learn how to serve a hot single shot expresso as opposed to a cold and watery black soup! It took far too long, and was hampered by the staff concerned being pre-occupied with social chit chat with other bar staff.
We went to the pub last wednesday and had excellent scampi and chip and Pimms with strwberries and cherries and excellent expresso served with plenty of smiles all the space of 30 minutes!
There is also the constant irritation of being asked "Is everything alright?" when you are only half way through your main course; ask at the end when the customer pays and then feedback will be given. By the way the food was OK.
To sum up, there was a lack of leadership and motivation in the bar today..4 girls running about..but the customers seemingly very much in the way.
So what price must the customer pay for "consistency?" We are glad that today was not a special occasion. Where to go...
Read moreHi I visited the Dog and Partridge for a works Christmas lunch todayThis was pre-booked and the food ordered, deposit paid 2 weeks agoI have to say the 12 of us set out to enjoy a leisurely 2 hour lunch break, exchange xmas gifts, have a drink and enjoy our Christmas lunchIt all started well with the starters arriving within a reasonable timeAfter that things started to go downhillAfter an hour and a quarter we were still waiting for our main courses, 2 of the 12 of us had already eaten whilst the rest of us were sat waiting.I spoke to the Manager who said they were busy and that they were being plated up as we spoke. He just repeated this when I said I was concerned about the time it had taken and how long we had left of our extended lunch break.Main courses did arrive, I must admit to being slightly disappointed after the wait to find the roast potatoes and the peas were undercookedAfter an hour and 3/4, 15 minutes before we due back at work I again spoke to the barman to tell him I was very disaappointed with the service and the time it had taken for a pre-booked meal to arriveAt this I was told again they were busy and that he had been late to work that day which hadn't helped matters. Whilst I understand its not his fault I wanted someone to at least apologise for the service and lack of apology that we had received alreadyIt never cameAbsolutely appallling service, terrible food and no sign of any customer service whatsoeverI won't be...
Read moreI made the mistake of recommending "The Dog" for a works Christmas gathering of 20+ people on Christmas Eve 2014. The food was average after a very long wait. The service at the bar was slow to the point of being ignored. The Boddingtons beer was awful and the whole round was taken back. It had a metallic taste. Worst of all was the Liverpudlian landlady. I don't think I have ever met a more antagonistic, surly, foul mouthed, aggressive person in the service industry. She is more suited to the prison service. It is as if customers are an intrusion on her time and resents having to tolerate them. Arguing with customers who have been given the wrong order and being told to move glasses so she could set up for a reservation IN AN HOUR'S TIME, as well as throwing a coat on the floor that was draped over a chair she wanted are just a sample of the things this woman does. Yes it was busy, but that does not excuse her actions. The pub will certainly be lacking 20 or more people next year (not just at Christmas either), so I'm sure that will make her happy -...
