The food is okay but what spoiled things for me was the customer service. There have been a couple of times when I have gone into the restaurant, when they have the electronic 'open' sign on display. Then I have stood patiently behind other customers waiting to be served. One of the young men saw me, and served all of the other customers first and only then decided to tell me that the takeaway was actually closed and he could not served me, once I got up to the counter. To be honest, I was quite shocked, he'd clearly seen me come in and I felt like I was being singled out for some strange reason.
He had clearly seen me standing there before as he'd turned and looked at me, and the sign said 'open' so why make me stand there before abruptly telling me it is closed?
It is a shame because I have tried their food in the past, and it is okay as far as Jamaican food goes, but the service from the young men serving there has always been fairly nonchalant or abrupt, despite the fact that I'd been a regular customer before and had always been fairly cheerful and friendly up until that point.
I also in the past have found the service painfully slow, even if there are few customers there and I am just ordering a couple of patties. However, as it is one of the few Jamaican takeaways in the area, I have just accepted that perhaps that is just the way they run.
But then having my time wasted and being refused service, when there was no indication that the takeaway was closed, was unfortunately the last straw for me.
I no longer eat out at Caribbean takeaway stores anymore, and simply cook my own. Much cheaper and the service better! If this improves, I may consider going back and recommending it to friends and family again, but at the moment, it seems silly to spend money with a business that clearly does...
Read moreFirst of all I don't know why there are so much 5 stars?? Anyways I went inside to eat in and first impressions the tables and chairs were dirty, the tables were wooden so it would stain even more and the floor boards were peeling off, the window sides had a bit of mould and dust, the decor? There was none. Uncomfortable to sit in and very small sitting area, they need to deep clean more.
The food was okay the chicken was nice and soft tho and the food pricing was good to be fair, but after I ate I had a bit of a stomachache which never happens to me, and the rice was soggy and I don't think most of the food was fresh because I saw the person working there put food in the MICROWAVE and I heard the microwave ting multiple times.
Customer service? There is none tbh
If your thinking to sit in there and eat... just don't, get the food for takeout, but then again the food isn't all that
Sorry to say first time coming here and it will be the last. They need to improve on the hygiene and eating in area A TON.
Also in the other reviews I see cleaner tables and steel forks and tissue and plates... I did not get that NONE of those, just got a takeout box and PLASTIC fork and spoon...
Read moreIf you want something to eat that is truly satisfying then Maureens Caribbean cafe is the place to visit. The food is simply sublime. The goat curry and rice is a must and the jerk chicken is to die for. All this food is freshly prepared so the chicken was lovely and moist. Very friendly atmosphere and friendly staff. But don't expect restaurant standards but also don't judge a book by its cover as the place is looking a little tiered and could do with some fresh paint. Maureens is situated at the bottom of rounday road in Leeds so if you are looking for great food then this is definitely the place to visit. Prices are very reasonable which is positive, on the down side parking is bit of an issue and the step into the cafe could make it difficult for some disabled users and more so if you need to use the toilet which is up stairs. But I would forget any negativity as the food is just the best. That good in fact I travel from wetherby just to get...
