No regrets very enjoyable experience. After a short walk along the cliff top from Howard Park on a very blustery day. A group of 8 of us dropped in to the Tavern without a booking to have some lunch. This turned out not to be a problem for the husband and wife team who run the sizeable venue. We were entertaining distant relatives from Dubai. From the menus 6 of us choose beer battered fish and chips 1 child’s macaroni/ cheese and 1 gammon steak with fried eggs. The food was delivered together all very well presented and good size portions all hot- what more could you ask for. Reasonably priced. Well done the staff. The venue has a very mixed taste decor. Seating was basic along with the cutlery and napkins. Service was efficient and unobtrusive. The top section at rear was the quietest area. Music was fairly loud around the bar. Pool table and darts are available. Animal friendly. Outside old style picnics tables restrict the elderly from using. As you have to lift your leg over bench to get properly seated. Special evening bargain menus available weekdays. Plenty free parking on site. A good to have local to satisfy most tastes....
Read moreCame here for a business lunch on neutral ground. The pub is decorated in English Heritage colours and light and airy. On a chill, wet Monday afternoon it was fairly empty, but in a couple of weeks with sunshine it should be rammed, even given the distance from other entertainments and attractions and backing on to a sheer cliff. Met by young enthusiastic member of staff who gave us plenty of space and time to settle before taking our orders. The food on offer was standard fare, generic with no nods to local or seasonal produce and inexpensive but was served hot and well portioned. The bar area is roomy but with COVID-19 restrictions in place I didn't get to look around so I'm unable to comment on the range of drinks on offer. All I can say is the ale I had went down well. The only downside was the inevitable antisocial smoker wedged by the entrance whose noxious fumes were wafted through the building. In all fairness, post-Covid this should prove to be a decent family pub-restaurant, a kilometre or two along the road and you'd have to fight your way in. I'm back this way August, let's see how...
Read moreI have been hete a few times now woth mixed reviews. On thisnoccasion I can say that it was one of the worst visits. Getting service to start was hard work. The waitress that eventually turned up seemd so young and immature I was aboit to check if her mother k ew where she was at this time of night.....there was a distinct lack of energy from her almost as of it was too much effort. When the food did arrive it was sub standard at best. Ordering desert was another challenge too far fpor the waitress first of all when I asked for 2 different deserys which she wasn't sure of they had it and then when I asked for ice cream I asked for a mix of flavours left at her discretion.....I ended up with 3 of the same! My wife ordered the Creme Brullee whci arrived stone cold and the sugar not at all melted! Enquiring after this we were told 'that is how it should be'.
Needless to say I skipped the tip but offeted a verbal one: 'Try to at least smile'. A rolling of the eyes was the response I...
