Had an absolutely lovely meal here this afternoon. We got there about 30 minutes after it had opened and it was already full, which to me was a good sign instantly. This restaurant was so clean and upon entering you are greeted with such a beautiful water feature. As you climb the stairs you see the most stunning chandelier you have ever seen. The level of service is amazing from the staff who are all very friendly and attentive. You are not rushed at all. You are taken to your table and seated and asked instantly if you would like any drinks while you look through the menu. Drinks are served quickly and they give you time to look over the menu. Once ordered the food is delivered hot and very tasteful. I had no problems at all with anything from today at all. My only little fault I had is that there are quite a few stairs to climb, I didnt notice or ask if they was any disabled access sorry but I am sure you could phone to enquire if needed. They also have a separate room for larger tables and parties too. Supermarket is also just underneath the restaurant so handy to buy something from there after your meal. Plenty of food to choose from in freezers and they even sell dishes and pans etc there too. Well worth a trip in my opinion. Big car park which is disabled friendly as is the supermarket also.

Apalling service and so disappointing. On arrival, huge canteen type atmosphere with about 200 customers seated at the tables and only 9 waiter staff trying to serve everybody. No ambience in the place, bare walls, disgustingly dirty toilet area and completely disinterested, impersonal staff throughout the whole evening. We were 5 ladies just there to celebrate our birthdays and waited for 3/4 hr before anyone came to our table to take our order. We had to wave to attract a waiter's attention for that no happen. There was no organisation. Food and plates were slammed onto the table as happened on our neighboring tables too and wine bottle brought to us, was slammed down on the table, not even opened, we had to open it ourselves. During the meal we had to ask for appropriate cutlery to be able to eat and serve the food that was brought to us! Most of the staff looked like they had never been taught how to serve in a restaurant or how to run a restaurant- but quick to take our money at the end. The worst meal out experience for us all and together we have been celebrating our birthdays for 45yrs.

I had heard good things about Tai Pan by other Asian food enthusiasts. The Dim Sum platter was very good , you can tell that they are all hand crafted and individually had lots of great taste and textures . I also had S&P pork and pork satay . They were both too salty due to what I presume was MSG ,however the meat was perfectly cooked and very tender . The service is like clock work , they are all very well trained and their system was great , very quick and effective . Price was steep in comparison to other restaurants nearby , but can be justified by the great atmosphere and the grand room . I would return again and perhaps try better things on the menu . I recommend to anyone wanting to try some Chinese/Asian food outside of takeaways or for an occasion.

12 Dec 2019 Update:

Have been back a few times since last update. Went for a quick meal after Xmas shopping. Today is uncharacteristically quiet, may be we are just too early. Anyway, it was great to have order served up quickly. A pleasant experience.

29 Aug 2019 Update:

A little quick update. We were there for a quick lunch before heading back home. The quality of the dim sum is much better than previous experiences. We noticed they were building a stage of some sort. It could be a permanent fixture for may be some kind of Live performances, we have to wait and see.

If you have been here, you would know that you tick off the dim sum of choice on a paper menu/order form and hand it to the waiter. They actually enter one of our items wrongly into the computer. Dim sum is steamed and takes a longer time if they don't have some already defrosted in the cooler. So, long story short, we have to wait over 30 mins for that item. We would have cancel it, but it was one of my Dad's favorite ...

Anyway, the staff were friendly enough and very apologetic but obviously very green. We have left the lid of the teapot opened for a long time for a refill, but they didn't even noticed.

So a quick lunch turned out to be not so quick.

Of the many times I have been back, I'm happy to say food standard has not deteriorated, however, I have noticed that on certain weekdays, their standard does drop, for example Fried Hor Fun noodles gets really greasy ... need I say more ! So it is very much a lottery when you go in those...

The Tai Pan officially reopened on Monday, 24 July 2023.

The ambience and service is generally good, and food arrives hot, although it can be a little slower and challenging trying to attract the attention of waiting on staff during busy periods, which can be rather noisy.

It is such a shame the the Sunday dim sum trolley cart service ceased post-pandemic. Perhaps this was due to hygiene reasons ?

During peak times, where the cart was temporarily left unattended as waiting staff were delivering food to tables, some impatient Customers approached the cart. They lifted the lids off the dishes, leaned over to view the variety, and / or self-selected the dish they thought was most appealing, then gave the dim sum card for staff to stamp.

For special occasions such as Easter, Mother’s and Father’s Days, Christmas Eve and Day, and New Year’s Eve and Day, it is recommended that you book in advance avoid disappointment and / or to save longer wait times.

The ladies toilets are a little cramped, so you may have to face and lean over the toilet to close and lock the cubicle door behind you. Hopefully, all three wash basins now have adequate running water as opposed a slight trickle. Almost all would queue up to just use the middle one.

The ladies and disabled toilets, and perhaps the gents although that is not a place I would access, would benefit from a decent, periodic steam clean and regular monitoring to ensure there are sufficient supplies of liquid soap and...
