Booked afternoon tea for today as part of birthday celebrations for my daughter and grandaughter weeks ago and £30 deposit paid. Call last night to say restaurant not open on Mondays and by way of compensation we could go to Fletchers bar instead and would receive complementary drinks. Booked table at Fletchers on line. Attended bar today to be told food not served until Thursday! My family had travelled from Aintree and extremely disappointed. I have also requested a refund of deposit - still awaited ! Another group of ladies from Maghull had also booked by phone and experienced same situation. I had booked on line. The system accepts bookings even on days not available/ closed! Not good experience as we have patronised this restaurant often and encouraged friends to book also. I was about to book family dinner for 10 people 1st October but unsure I should do so . Updates: Refund received, phone call from customer service apologised for problems and offered afternoon tea free of charge by way of compensation. Hopefully the system has been fixed and bookings will only be accepted for days open. The restaurant has managed to redeem itself somewhat and hopefully we will still enjoy patronising...

My chicken Caesar salad was awful... far too much of the indescribable dressing on it, my poor limp pieces of lettuce looked very sad.. .when ordering I asked for my chicken to be well done...., it wasn't well done, it arrived cold, 'very pale' and bland and with the skin left on..ugh..lazy prep, lazy cooking!

My husband ordered the risotto, which sounded great on the menu, but unfortunately in reality was horrible, arrived luke warm, it was over salted, rice was all stuck together in lumps (more akin to a rice pudding) I am half Italian, I know what a good risotto should look and taste like... this wasn't it ....and for £14 was extremely poor value. The portions are very small for the prices they charge. Our first time here, definitely the last. Would have spoken up at the time and sent both meals back to the kitchen to remain there, but we were with friends and we didn't want to upset them. Oh and the chunky chips @ £4 for a tiny portion were horrid too, couldn't eat them!....

I generously gave 1* only because of the look of the place, certainly not for the food, ..... Don't waste your money, there are plenty of far better eateries in...

4 of us went for breakfast this morning after 2 of them had been before and loved it. Sorry to say we were very dissapointed. The waitress came for drinks order, 4 teas please. They arrived about 5 minutes later, warm but not hot. I asked for a pot of hot water which never arrived. I dont understand why they bring you hot drinks(in this case warm) way before your food arrives. We ordered our food which arrived about 40 minutes later, 2 big breakfasts and 2 porridge. The big breakfast had items missing from one of the plates so had to request them. The porridge arrived, omg it was awfull, it was like a dish of slops. For some reason the porridge was floating in syrup, it was barely warm and very sweet, took one spoonful and called the waitress over and told her we did not ask for syrup and we couldnt eat it and she said she would get us plain porridge with blueberries. We waited at least another 30-40 minutes for the replacement and that was only warm. Sorry to say but after looking forward to a nice breakfast we were very very dissapointed and have no intention of returning. The place is lovely and in a nice setting but that is all I can...

Nice atmosphere and good service. Went for breakfast after dropping my daughter off for her first day at school. Ordered eggs benedict with sausages and a flat white. The coffee was good but not the best and came quickly. The sausages where of good enough quality to satisfy but only good enough to go in a butty, not by themselves. The eggs benedict itself I can only give a 5. The the hollandaise was amazingly rich but lacked a tang note at the end. This just highlighted what was lacking in the other ingredients. The eggs whilst being well cooked, lacked a real eggy flavour, the muffins had little flavour were very closed texture and crunchy. (mcdonald's muffins are far better) the ham was ham not bacon or parma ham as it should be but it was thin low quality and grilled! It should be whiltshire thick and room temperature. This led to a total lack of balance in the dish.

Lovely venue at The Old Stables and service good though at busy times appears to drop,as trying to get waitress who took first order to follow up is difficult as we found their were long periods when no one was around. Needs to look at allocating set tables to waitress for continuity of service. Would go again .

Thursday night is steak night at the Old Stables. Great value for money, two rump steaks and a bottle of wine for £40 Upgrade to fillet or tomahawk for a little bit extra. Steaks and service were top notch , I would order the peppercorn sauce next time as I found the red wine jus a little bit salty .
