Disappointing. This is a wasted opportunity given the fantastic location within the park and with outside seating. When under Louis Louis management the drinks were consistently quite good; currently they range from undrinkable to ok. Most staff are lovely but some need to be taught how to make coffee with a coffee machine to produce consistent results (a management issue rather than a staff issue as quality is not checked). We come daily and had really hoped it would improve as they settled in.
Today I ordered a babycino - this should be warm, frothy milk (think hugs in a cup). Instead, it was cold (slightly above fridge temperature - cooler than youâd give a child) and not frothy at all. Took it back asking if it could be warm and they gave one which was scalding - again, the key here is that it should be warm. Burnt my tongue and just unpleasant tasting. I completely understand that this is generally made for children so served warm rather than hot - thatâs great and how it should be, but this was originally cold, then burnt the second time.
The pasteis de nata were completely stale with soggy pastry. Yesterday our order was incorrect. The cappuccino today was fine but nothing more.
Whilst the cafe provides compostable cups, they do not provide a composting service (these cups contain PLA and can only be composted at an aerobic commercial composting facility). These go straight to landfill. Given many people choose to sit down at the tables, it would be sensible to provide standard reusable mugs/ cups.
Given they charge premium prices, this is all just rather lacklustre and...
Read moreThis is an outside cafe I have been frequenting for many years. In this occasion took a lady (Suzanne), who attends my computer class for the aged, here on her 90th birthday. She wanted the same as me, a Classico (toasted cheese, ham and mustard sandwich). I think she had an iced tea, I had a similar cold drink. The food here is basic but good, a range of toasted sandwiches or salads, during the winter there are usually home made soups as well. The Classico is very good, and the other options (all veggie) also seem very popular. Up to about 18 months ago the soups were excellent, thick and hearty but at some point they changed and they are now too thin, watery and lacking in flavour for my tastes. The cafe has a small kitchen thereby restricting the menu, the number of staff etc. The service is as good as the restricted staff and size allow i.e. you might have to wait but not long and the service is invariably cheerful. Available are coffees, hot chocolates and usually a range of cakes. Dog friendly, with an ecletic clientele, one of my favourite cafes in the area. Oh and the money goes to a local sports charity...
Read moreReally great use of the location by a gourmet coffee enterprise with a local emphasis.
It's a large kiosk which means customer seating is all outside and the better for it so full advantage is made of the cafe's outlook. To one side there's the gentle whack of racquet and ball from the tennis courts. Turn the other way and gaze uninterrupted to the horizon as West Burgess Park stretches before you. And straight in front of the café's serving hatch admire a well-preserved garden square, that most humane of London's architectural innovations (in fact, this one is only three-quarters of a square - the café sits where the missing fourth side would be and...
