La Taberna isn’t trying to be trendy—it’s trying to be true. Tucked away on Roman Way, this family-run Italian restaurant offers a refreshingly sincere dining experience, where the food is heartfelt, the wine flows generously, and the atmosphere feels like a Sunday lunch in someone’s home.
Atmosphere The space is intimate and unpretentious, with soft lighting, rustic touches, and a soundtrack that leans toward Italian classics. It’s the kind of place where regulars are greeted by name, and newcomers are treated like long-lost cousins. There’s warmth in the walls, and a lived-in charm that resists polish in favor of personality.
Food & Drink The menu is rooted in central and southern Italian traditions, with seasonal specials and comforting staples:
Pappardelle al ragù Marchigiano – slow-cooked, rich, and deeply satisfying
Linguine al granchio – Devon crab, garlic, and datterini tomatoes; fresh and elegant
Vegetarian and vegan options – thoughtfully prepared, not just box-ticking
House wine – simple, honest, and surprisingly enjoyable for the price
The food isn’t flashy—it’s soulful. Portions are generous, and the plating is rustic rather than refined. Expect flavour over finesse, and heart over...
Read moreRun and founded by an Italian family, their passion for cooking and the quality of ingredients really stood out to us. The hubs and I popped in for an al fresco dinner when the weather was nice one evening and were bowled over by the experience. The service was top-notch, friendly, and the FOOD. THE FOOD! The bolognese was great but my hubby ordered the lasagna (of which I was blessed to have snuck a bite). It may be the best I've ever had in my life, and I make a mean lasagna! The creamy white sauce was completely unexpected and absolutely delicious. The folks next to us were going crazy over their calamari and the old man on the other side of us couldn't stop talking to himself about how awesome the place was.
The dishes and wine are reasonably priced, the setting is cute and everyone there (staff and customers) were so friendly, we wound up having great conversation with everyone sitting outside. I heard the tiramisu is to die for. Next time we'll order that and the calamari. And whatever the old...

We were hopeful given the menu, but the experience quickly soured. It took over 20 minutes (and a reminder) just to get menus. Staff then seemed irritated that we needed a few minutes to choose. The real issue came when our toddler accidentally bumped her head and started crying — instead of offering any understanding, we were abruptly asked to pay and leave, even though two of us hadn’t finished eating. This is clearly not a kid-friendly place. Disappointing, as the food was genuinely good.
EDIT (following owners' response): I can confirm that I did visit your restaurant on the evening of 2nd May 2025. I understand this may not reflect your usual service or values, and perhaps it was an off day — but this was our experience, and it felt dismissive and uncomfortable, especially given we chose your place thinking a family-run business would be welcoming to young children. I hope future guests are treated...
