Serving a taste of the Phillipines, Mama’s Kubo is a newly opened restaurant in West Hampstead. We were intrigued to try the food given there are very few Filipino restaurants in London.
The restaurant has plenty of seating and the atmosphere was relaxed. We sat in a lovely little window table which was slightly secluded and would make a wonderful date spot.
The owners and staff at Mama’s Kubo are reason alone to visit! We received such a friendly welcome and felt like friends when we left. The hard work and passion that has gone into the restaurant shines through in the food and the service. All of the food we tried was based on recommendations which didn’t disappoint.
To start we had the Fried Pusit (£6.50) which is Filipino fried squid served in a delicious sweet crispy coating. A really generous amount for the price too. We also had the Fried Chicken Wings (£5) with a sweet and sticky coating which was full of flavour. The skin was crispy, the meat was tender and they were served with a delicious sweetened chilli sauce.
For our first main we had the Manok Skewer (£9.20). Manok means chicken in Filipino but it was so much more than that. The chicken was served on a bed of bok choy and a salad that had a great sweet and zesty dressing.
Up next were the Kubo Beef Ribs (£14.50), This was the star of the show for sure, and considering all the food up until then was amazing it must have been really good! A great quality beef rib (Jacob’s ladder cut) is basted in a traditional Filipino marinade before being slowly cooked until literally falling off the bone. Heavenly!
Located in the middle of Finchley Road Station, West Hampstead Station and Finchley Road & Frognal Station, the restaurant is a little off the beaten track but is worth the trip. You step into a warm and welcoming environment that makes you want to stay for that extra dish or drink. We would definitely recommend Mama’s Kubo to those that want to try Filipino cuisine or just simply want an excellent meal at a fantastic restaurant in...
Read moreMama's Kubo is a Filipino family style run kitchen - "kubo" being an icon of Phiilippine culture describing a type of stilt house. Mama's Kubo offers a variety of popular dishes ranging from the very simple, like a meal of fried salted fish and rice, to fish curry, chicken curry, complex and cozidos of Iberian origin. Located in a converted house on the corner Finchely Road and Palace Court, it is easy to miss. The interior is colorful and simple, seating about 50 to 60 people. The best part of Mamas Kubo is the service. Efficient, friendly and warm.
The menu consists of small starters, salads and larger mains. I would highly recommend the Lumpia (deep fried giniling wrapped in a thin egg crêpe, resembling a spring roll). It as crispy and full of flavour. The Longaniza (sausage) was excellent as well. Ask for the chilli sauce - it is a great complement the smokey loganiza meat. The starters range from £4.00 to £6.00. As for mains, the Chicken Apritada was full of flavour with the chicken marinated in a sweet sour sauce. The Pan Fried Fish Platter was a disappointment with the three types of fish being overly bony, leaving little actual fish meat. The mains range from £9.00 to £16.00. The portions of rice could be more generous considering the price tag of £3.25 for a small bowl. The desserts are traditional and tasty. My favourite was the Biko - rice cake made from sticky rice (locally known as malagkit), coconut milk, and brown sugar.
Mamas Kubo is a great spot for discovering authentic Filipino cuisine or enjoying a Sunday family lunch in the...
Read moreMy husband and I received a great welcome.
The prawn spring rolls with the chilli dip was lovely.
We had the beef ribs to share. The beef was succulent.
To be honest for us it wasn't really enough to share, it was quiet small for two people, due to bones and fat. There wasn't enough asparagus and potatoes for two. One ribs each, or just one and something else would have been better had we have known.
Fries were not on the menu, but the kitchen accomadated this 😋, thank you so much.
The Jasmine rice was lovely.
The mango salad very nice, just a bit too much liquid.
The only issue was the mango salad came then awhile later the fries, then a good while later the ribs and rice. It would have been good if everything came at the same time!
Lemongrass drink was so nice, small glasses though. Maybe a single and large should be available, as a suggestion.
My husband really enjoyed the red horse beer. If you are a beer lover please try it.
We had to move seats as too many little flys were flying around. However they seemed to be worse in our new seats. It did spoil the meal and my husband and I's time together, so although would have stayed longer we didn't.
The price was very good, we would have spent more, and would...
