This was meant to be a birthday treat from a friend. We love Japanese food but unfortunately it was a very disappointing experience. There were 3 of us and we went for set dinners – two sushi and one sashimi. Having eaten countless Japanese meals in Japan, Europe and in the UK I was rather shocked at how much could go wrong with those meals. The food did not appear as fresh as it should be and some elements were just tasteless. Tempura was dark and soaking with oil – especially the aubergine. Both daikon and grated ginger tasted earthy and of nothing else. The amount of daikon on the sashimi plate was just over the top. There was nothing special about the sushi rolls (you could get similar from M&S!) and they lacked any flavour. Plastic ‘greenery’, usually only seen in take-away sets and boxes, also made an appearance! Actual sashimi slices were OK. The fish cake, rice and miso were also fine. The service was prompt – empty plates were taken away instantly. Unfortunately, the waitress spoke very little English and seemed annoyed when we asked to repeat the list of desserts as we could not quiet make out what she had said. She recited the list listing ‘orange and melon’ after the unexciting vanilla and strawberry ice cream flavours and one of us asked for the orange expecting it to be a sorbet. Imagine our surprise when an actual orange fruit cut into segments was served on a plate! Where did such an idea actually come from? One would expect something more from a well-known Japanese restaurant. When we enquired about green tea ice-cream we were asked ‘do you mind paying extra?’ – we did not mind but why had we not been even given such an option? BTW, having checked the menu on our return home we have discovered that the price difference between the vanilla/strawberry and green tea (or red bean, which apparently is also available) was 50p! Obviously, too expensive to be included in a set dinner for guests looking for an enjoyable JAPANESE experience. We will not be recommending this restaurant to...
Read moreI went to momo a long time ago when it was in the hotel... It's a bit pricey, but ok... so when I bypassed it at a new location, I decided to collect some dons for lunch (salmon and tuna). Got home a few minutes later to discover that raw fish was put on top of steaming rice, and it was half cooked. It was the most disgusting meal i had in years. Clearly, it's not authentic Japanese, as most people know not to put sashimi on hot rice 🤦🏻♀️
Adding herr that I just had reply from komo to let them know preferences for next time to avoid situation like this - they must be kidding me - who in the world asks sashimi as preference to be pur in steaming rice to half cook??? I should have taken a photo of tuna one - the tuna started to turn brown/grey. Next time, dear momo owners, I will contact food hygiene as you can not put raw fish on hot rice, especially (ESPECIALLY) for take away as it health and safety violation due to higher...
Read moreRead to the end 👇 This is a place you would never happen to walk by and decide to go in Because Firstly, it’s not on the way to anywhere and secondly, the outside does not sufficiently reflect the quality of the food nor the friendly service. Thirdly, due to the low level lighting it often looks shut (even when open). We have made this our go-to Japanese whenever we are anywhere near this side of London. It’s right by Hanger Lane underground tube station on Central line. They have a changing menu of hot and cold chef’s specials. Without any exception, any dish we have ordered here has been delicious, balanced flavours, beautifully presented and authentic Japanese, not a westernised version of it. Also lots of variety on drinks menu. Finally, prices are SO reasonable. Usually Japanese is v expensive in London but here it’s affordable and excellent. Could not...
