🚇Palmers Green 🍺 £4.80 Mahou
The Alfred Herring is located in the heart of Palmers Green, North London. The nearest station is Palmers Green mainline.
This establishment was a former retail space, later becoming a Wetherspoons in 2006. The pub's name pays homage to Alfred Herring, a distinguished local soldier of the First World War who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry in France in 1918. This former Wetherspoons ceased operation in May 2024. However, it has since been revitalized and reopened in December 2024 under independent ownership.
The pub features a spacious single-bar layout, largely retaining the décor and fixtures from its previous iteration. The servery is a good size and extends along the right-hand side. To the right of the servery is a dartboard, a pool table is located to the left. The interior offers ample seating across two interconnected areas, incorporating a variety of high tables, booths, and traditional tables with chairs. There are several strategically placed Tv screens dotted about.
The beer selection offers a solid array of well-established brews, including three cask ales. I decided on a Mahou, my pint hit the spot, price point was under a fiver. The food menu comprises classic pub fare, with breakfast options available in the mornings and roasts offered on a Sunday.
I visited at 1:30pm on a bright Saturday lunchtime in March. The pub had a relaxed atmosphere, with a couple of lads enjoying a game of pool and several solo imbibers nursing their pints. The service was great, I had a lovely chat with the owners, who were the consummate hosts, and very passionate about their pub.
This pub hosts live music, karaoke evenings, and shows live sporting events on Sky and TNT.
The @thealfredherring is a warm and welcoming community local that has a passionate and friendly team at the helm. The beer is reasonably priced, there is a good food menu on offer and there is plenty to keep you entertained. This North London local is well worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Read moreThis place is full of regulars that stare you down and make you feel uncomfortable not just trying to make accusations but they seem really racist. They have got some weird relationship with The staff there. I saw one staff member come around the bar and indulge in conversation with them while I had to wait for around 10-15 minutes before being served. I can understand if I was in the middle of a turnover shift but she was touching them a lot even saw her rub this guys shoulders and feed him. At first I thought it was her husband or partner but then I saw her start flirting and touching some guy by the pool table. It made me feel extremely uncomfortable, I came for food and a pint not a show 🤮 . It was the manly looking maybe Romanian, Bulgarian women could have been Polish but I didn’t want to speak to her any more then I had to. speaking of her she was extremely rude and had a poor attitude like she didn’t want to be there, her face says it all the lack of customers brings the atmosphere down. I heard alright music and thought this place would be alright then they changed it to some 60s music to be completely honest I don’t know where they are getting these playlist but the need help. Just not my cup of tea. speaking of Tea I paid for a smash burger and the middle of the burger was cold which was absolutely unacceptable and uneatable. I had a guinness but maybe there lines weren’t clean because it tasted disgusting whatever you do don’t come here...
Read moreCan someone please tell the team members to get off their mobile phones, which should not be allowed behind the bar, and do some work. When it is busy, nobody minds cleaning their table or bringing glasses up and there are a number of excellent team members, but a small number of the team spend their time on their mobile phone resting on the till beside the glass wash area, ignoring the fact that there are tables with dishes to be cleared and tables that need cleaning. Please can someone enlighten those team members that they are there to work - which involves ensuring the customers enjoy their experience and don't have to clean their own tables or bring their own glasses to the bar. When it is quiet - find something to clean. We know the pub closes in a couple of weeks but can the management team please ensure that the pub closes...
