Well, a fairly nice pub, but a few qualifications otherwise it'd be 4 stars. I arrived solo, a doorman, watching me as I was in the process of putting my mask on greets me and says I need to wear a mask to enter. Oh really?! A car rolls up and deposits a young maskless lady - she is not asked to wear a mask, so enters without one in sight of said doorman, and breezes into the pub, with no mask and a clear infection vector risk. No-one seems to care. One set of rules for one, and another for the others??
Staff were great, and needed to be as they had problems with their draught ales, necessitating replacements, which they did, no fuss. Good stuff. Pleasant to interact with and tell them their glasses were unclean or the ale was clearly off, or the table was dirty so would they please clean it?
Mask wearing in general and especially in the gents toilets. Most of the pub wore a mask when required to. Gents was an exception - people of all ages, but mostly 60+ did not, and no-one, I mean absolutely no-one enforced mask wearing from the staff. Given the grief to wear a mask as I got here, this is odd and shows an inconsistency in the management's attitude to controlling the spread of a known deadly virus that is prevalent at the moment. Are they truly indifferent to your life?
Table was sticky and had food debris and signs of the previous occupants' drink marks all over it, but when asked, the staff said they cleaned tables after customers left - well not in this case, and I don't think we're exceptional - its more an indication of the lackadaisical attitude to the health and possible death of their patrons.
Should and could do better. For a large chain, this is unforgivable. Smarten your act up, please, if you want my friends and I to ever return and recommend your pub, especially with so many independent...
Read moreWe visited The Crown and had a good experience overall, though there were a few things to note.
For starters, we ordered chicken wings, nachos, and butterfly prawns — all tasted nice and were a good portion. For mains, we had macaroni and cheese with garlic bread, fried battered halloumi with chips, a burger and fries, and chicken nuggets with fries for the kids.
For dessert, we had a kids’ ice cream scoop (very generous), apple pie (which was nice), and sticky toffee pudding with ice cream — not the best I’ve had, but still enjoyable.
They offer a 3-course set menu for £13.29, which is an absolute bargain, but the options were limited. I ended up paying full price for a cheeseburger and chips because it was the only thing I liked — it was delicious but cost more than the full set menu. The kids’ meal was just £1, which was great value. That said, ordering everything separately ended up costing more than expected.
One downside was the long wait. I was told it would be around 45 minutes, but we were there for almost three hours in total. That included waiting between starters, mains, and dessert, and by the time dessert arrived, we were all tired and ready to go home.
On a positive note, they have a lovely garden area where the kids could play, the staff were friendly, and there’s something for all budgets. However, a few menu items were unavailable, which made choices a bit limited.
Overall, it’s a nice family spot with good value options — just be prepared for a...
Read moreWhen I book a table for dinner, right at the start of the dinner service, I don't expect to be then told that there is going to be an hour wait minimum for food. Either your kitchen is terribly understaffed or you are taking far too many table bookings when there is no way you can deliver a decent service in that time. I was supposed to have the table from 5:30 to 7, so for two thirds of the booked time I am expected to sit hungry? Highly disappointing, I left with my party and found alternative arrangements as eating so late would ruin the rest of our plans for the evening. Not only that, it gets worse - this is the second time this has happened. On my first visit the wait was "40 minutes" and ended up being an hour, so I had no confidence that I would have been able to eat at all before I would need to leave. I gave you a second chance and you just proved you are incapable of organising an efficient or effective dinner service. I will not be returning again. I am part of an orchestra group that performs at the nearby Trinity School maybe two or three times a year. Together with our audience we bring maybe 200 people to the area around dinnertime, all potential guests for you. After such an awful experience (for a second time) I can tell you that I shan't be recommending you, in fact I will be advising that they stay away. Either sort out the mess in your kitchen, or warn people when they book that your service is very slow. It's not fair to take people's...
