Four adults had a meal at the Earl Haig on Friday 23rd July 2021. Have eaten fairly good meals a couple of previous times. Last night we couldn’t order any starter for my wife who has a shellfish allergy because apparently all the starters are cooked in the same pan! Do they not have more than one pan or wash their utensils? This didn’t go down well as you can imagine. So my wife had no starter. Three burgers were ordered and I ordered an 8oz sirloin steak cooked medium. My steak was dry and tough, possibly it was cooked to medium but it was definitely not juicy and tasty. This meal led us thinking we’ll try elsewhere next time. 27/7/21. 1pm. The owner responded to the above stating that they followed allergy protocols in advising that my wife’s starter could not be cooked. I don’t dispute that and agree that the bartender’s advice was correct. What the owner fails to realise or comment upon and perhaps I could have explained it better, was that my wife’s first choice, the ‘Karaage Chicken’ and second choice, ‘Parsley Breaded Mushrooms’ were both not available to her as the bartender told us that the kitchen could not guarantee there would be no shellfish cross contamination as these dishes were cooked in the same pan as the other starters such as ‘King Prawn Cocktail’ and ‘Salt and Pepper Calamari’. So my point is that neither of my wife’s first two choices were available to her, which hardly suggests that the owner caters for her allergy, hence why I mentioned that it seemed to us at the time that the kitchen only had one pan in their cupboard for the starter dishes. (The owner has not commented on my...
Read moreUpdate. Went here 4 years ago, so thought it was worth giving it another try as it's been refurbished ect. Review from 20th Aug 2024 Four of us went here for a meal. We had the chicken pie, fish and chips, lasagne. My son ordered the sharers nachos (as he couldn't find anything he would eat), but asked for them to be plain. He would have got a bigger portion going to londis over the rd and getting a bag for a couple of pounds. The portion was ridiculous for £8.79. My pie case topping was hard and the chicken slimy, so I just ate the bottom of the pie, but the mash was lovely. The other two meals were OK. We had two desserts and plain ice cream. The cocktails were meant to be a treat, but they were awful. Cost over £100 for 3 mains, the nachos, two adult desserts and plain ice cream, a coke, shandy and 4 cocktails that were on offer. The staff knew I wasn't happy as I said to the waitress about the nachos, she just smiled. The staff seem to prefer the regulars and seem clicky. I 100% won't be returning or recommending this restaurant to anyone.
Review from 4 years ago. Although limited food as closing on the 26th for refurb, and staff were very kind, the actual food wasnt that great. My jacket was black/bruised so had to cut half away. Hardly any topping with the jacket but plenty of salad. I didnt complain to staff as they were so nice i didnt see the point, however i would not...
Read moreWhat can i say, a really unpleasant visit to what used to be a great pub. Such a shame to see a fine pub being run so badly, Our visit for an early dinner on a late thursday afternoon with some old freinds was completely spoilt by what appeared to be the landlord (overweight, loud and overly camp) that appeared to spend the entirety of the evening drinking and swearing within our earshot from the end of the bar while browbeating his already clearly unhappy staff who couldn't have less enthusiasm if they tried. Our food when it arrived over 45 minutes after we'd ordered was quite simply ruined by whoever cooked it, we had to send one meal back twice before it was cooked ok, and thanks to the unpleasant and completely unhelpful land lord, who actualy made us all feel bad for bringing the offending meal to his attention, clearly wanting to get back to his pint and coversation instead of helping us get the meals that we'd paid for, rusulted in us all agreeing that it was without doubt one of the worst experiences we'd had in a long time. We was once regulars at The Earl Haig, but will certainly not be passing the doors agan and will gladly let anyone that listens know our opinions of this once good pub.
