Staying locally we have visited this venue a few times with our children and 2 dogs. A very friendly, welcoming fun place that has a fantastic atmosphere. Due to refurbishing the kitchen, food was not available. However, the pub owners recommended, adjacent is a barge boats on the canal "Baltic Seafood" where we could purchase food and bring back to the pub to enjoy. The TV was showing live sport and we al enjoyed playing a game of darts too.

"We haven't done food for six years". So don't believe the website! But landlord is very helpful, can order in from local takeaways and eat in the pub. He has the menus! Also a seafood boat on canal, recommended. Charging point for phones for us boaters and a good pint.

Lovely staff and a very chill wee historic place that’s retained a lot of its charm. Barmaid was wonderful.

[Update- I since visited The Horse Guardsman as it's run by the same brewer. I found their cask mild and IPAs a bit lacking, so I think Greyhound have made the right choice sticking with the Best Bitter. It's very nice.. mild banana/hoppy twang. You could always have a Guinness. Did I say the Guinness...]

This is what I CALL a pub!

Cosy wee lounge with real fire, well kept cask ale and when we visited they'd given out complimentary dishes of roasties. They've squeezed in a large telly and locals were watching the footy.

Plus there's a more sparsely decorated separate area with more cafe style chairs and tables on bare floirboards. A bit like the historic Lounge/Public bar setup.

My partner is a "clean freak" (she even worries that if I take too long to drink my tea that dust will fall into the cup and contaminate it). She said the ladies loo was immaculately clean and they even had free sanitary products on offer.

That kind of reflects the warm and considerate welcome you get in this place.

Ale, warm welcome and comfort are the most important aspects in my book. Thus the full marks.

I haven't tried the food. Only improvements I can really think of are for some greenery in the yard and adding another cask ale.. their brewery does a Pale Ale and a Mild (you don't see mild ale every day) but of course that would depend on popularity. For all I know, the locals may drink mostly lager and Guinness. Oh.. did I mention that the Guinness is top...

For locals only. I went in once 2 years agoand I will never go there again. From the moment we went in and as strangers and foreigners we had been given looks and weird comments and the vibe was like "what the ..ck are you doing here, this is not your place". The place has great potential but tbh having lived in front of it for over 2 weeks just recently I have not once seen it full and buzzing which tells me not much changed since my last visit. Such a shame cuz it could be a great spot as it is just by the canal with a pretty location. Could serve well and make ton of money had it not been full of...

I've been a few times recently to the Greyhound for drinks both with a friend on my own and I have to say I found it a refreshing well run, really relaxing pub. Friendly landlady, staff and many regular local visitors with or without dogs, some playing darts, others watching tv or just there for a drink enjoying company. I'm not from the area but would definitely go back if in the area again and would recommend it to anyone looking for a friendly pub...
