Unfortunately it was not the Mothering Sunday I had hoped for. Not for my mother, my lifelong friends or for myself. Whilst we enjoyed the food and the staff were polite and helpful, I would like the management to acknowledge the following:
I booked our table on or soon after the 14th of February stating that we had a well behaved dog. Yet we were seated on a table that could not accommodate a dog to even lay down. He spent the whole time tangled amongst our feet which meant I was unable to relax for the entirety of our visit. I even emailed, first thing, in the morning to check you were still happy to accommodate a dog as I received no acknowledgement from you to say that my special request was accepted or not accepted? Just as well, the dog I brought was not a St Bernard!!!!
On the mini blackboard on our table was a list of guests that were to be seated there throughout Mothering Sunday. This immediately gave me and my guests the impression that we were just on a âget rich quickâ conveyor belt. Get them in, get them out, re-sell the table type attitude. We were told that we needed to be prompt to sit down, yet once we ordered our food we waited 45 mins for it to arrive. At pudding time we were told we had to be quick as we only had 10 minutes left before our table was re-sold. We would have loved to stay for pudding but didnât want to add indigestion to our rushed experience. I had driven from Gloucestershire, 2.5 hrs, one of my friends had travelled from Scotland and the other from Sussex, just so we could celebrate what should have been a very special day of feeling appreciated.
The final insult was when I was handed a bill without the ÂŁ80 deposit deducted, which I had paid a month prior and then we were presented with Motherâs Day envelopes with vouchers in and were told, with a huge amount of glee, that these were so we could return and quote, âspend even more money!â
So we left the establishment not being able to have pudding or coffee and feeling quite short changed, to be frank. The Railway HAD been our local for many years which is why we wanted to return but I think a picnic from M&S in the park would have been a more enjoyable option, on this occasion. My husband has spent many years in hospitality and always took great pride in making his customers feel very special. I am afraid we all just felt like we...

The staff here donât just serve youâthey genuinely care. Theyâre friendly, attentive, and always ready to recommend a great drink or chat about your day. Thereâs a real sense that the team loves what they do, and it shows.
The management at The Railway knows what makes a pub special. In the summer, youâll find the place surrounded by hanging baskets of flowers that give it a charming, almost storybook feel. When winter rolls around, a well-fed log-burning stove turns the place into a cozy retreat. Itâs these thoughtful touches that make The Railway feel like a home away from home.
And then thereâs the foodâespecially the Sunday roast! This isnât just any roast; itâs the kind people travel for. With perfectly roasted meats, crispy potatoes, and Yorkshire puddings that are the real deal, itâs a standout experience thatâs worth the trip. If youâre a fan of a classic Sunday roast done right, The Railway is a must-visit.
The drinks selection is solid, too, with a good mix of local ales, wines, and everything in between.
Overall, The Railway nails what a local pub should be: friendly, well-run, and full of character. Itâs the kind of place where you feel welcome whether youâre a regular or just passing through. If youâre looking for a great local spot with a warm atmosphere, excellent food, and a top-notch team, The Railway...
