Nel's — Restaurant in Newry, Mourne and Down District Council

In these times of the coronavirus it is absolutely refreshing to see a cafe that is spotless, spacious and organised that serves great food and has attentive workers. Belfast cafes could do well to take a leaf out of Nel's book instead of their total overreaction to said virus i.e. plastic partitioning, sanitiser and face masks etc. All a cafe needs to genuinely do is to have its workers maintaining exceptionally high levels of cleanliness like Nel's does instead of not bothering at all like a lot of cafes in Belfast do. Reassuring in these times and Nel's is the benchmark. I haven't seen a better cafe in terms of cleanliness and hygiene in the States, all over Ireland, Italy or Spain. It is all well and good that cafes are attempting to prevent their staff from being overly exposed to coronavirus but it would be much more practical to actually have them clean their premises every once in a while too as it lends immeasurably to the whole hospitality and catering experience that...

Meals that were coming out were mostly sandwiches and toasties which all looked great, good sized portions lovely salad on the side reasonably priced, also quite busy.

I opted for the fish & chips paid £10.95 (no peas)

First impressions - good, although fish slightly on the small side.

Chips 6/10 enough portion, only few undercooked

Fish 2/10 a very generous 2 soley on first impressions of what looked to be a light batter.

Fish flesh was watery zero flavour coming through, just watery squashy texture.

Batter top slightly crisp and just the right thickness however underneath and inside was squashy-greasy- yak! Again zero flavour

Food was good, however my 87yr old mother was accused of vaping in the toilet when putting on her lipstick before leaving (she has never had a vape or been a smoker)

She was deeply distressed by the false accusation and invited the staff to search her bag and pockets for a vape. The staff member declined to do this and continued to loudly verbally abuse her insisting that she had seen her do it and speaking to her in a disrespectful derogatory and derisory manner.

Eventually the manager agreed to search her bag for a vape and of course didn’t find one and saw my mothers empty pockets
