Steak and Stay

On arrival at Pier 36, there appeared to be some confusion. Had this Donaghadee institution, renowned for its award-winning cuisine, helpful staff, & comfortable four star accommodation been rebranded? Publicity for entertainment at “The Commodore” was emblazoned on every wall, & stacks of “Port Devine” tourist information leaflets were displayed near the entrance. No, we hadn’t entered a parallel universe. Much to our relief, we discovered that a new crime drama “Hope Street” was currently filming here, & Pier 36 was still thriving.

We were invited to get a taste of their Steak & Stay offer, which is terrific value from £139, including an overnight stay, their legendary steak dinner for two & a gourmet breakfast.

At Pier 36, all steak is sourced from locally reared cattle & dry aged for a minimum of 28 days right on site in a purpose built cool room.

Superb, freshly caught seafood is also available, with fish specials changing daily. We couldn’t resist ordering the incredibly tempting langoustine starter, a plateful of crispy whitebait, seabass on a bed of balsamic onion mash, & whole plaice with scallops.

We were staying in the Smith Superior Room. Named after the Captain of the Titanic, this first floor room enjoys panoramic views of the harbour, complete with a four poster bed, a generous lounge area, & a large bathroom.

The breakfast was also stunning, with an exceptional vegetarian fry, & smoked kippers with creamy scrambled eggs: just perfect for setting you up for a day of exploring this excellent destination with its beautiful walks, & sights such as the Harbour, the Lighthouse & the soon to be refurbished Moat complete with Ireland's only camera obscura.

To make the most of your staycation, their sister venues Harbour & Company & Bow Bells are the ideal spots for lunch or coffee.

Call in to Pier 36 and tag us on your posts.

This place has been a family haunt for the last ten years. Unfortunately we couldn't dine here this year due to family issues so at last, for our 30th wedding anniversary, we got our long awaited meal. Oh dear. Things didn't go smoothly from the start. It took 20 mins and to ask three times to get clarification on the gluten free options on the menu. The staff to this point really looked like they where trying to avoid us. First course was fabulous as usual so we where all looking forward to our mains. Three of the party ordered sirloin steak cooked medium, the food the restaurant prides itself on. One came rare and hadn't been rested as it blead all over the plate. The second was cooked medium rare with the third medium well. All the steaks where overly fatty. However that wasn't the worst point. My daughter who is 8 months pregnant had the burger dressed with bacon and cheese. The bacon was only partially cooked with half of one rasher being raw. We asked for this to be addressed and a few mins later the burger was returned with well done bacon on it. Our issue was that the same burger was brought back as well., the one that was contaminated with raw bacon. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE especially for a heavily pregnant woman. I complained again, the burger was replaced and it ended up she had to eat her main meal while we all looked on. On settling the bill we where offered a token few pounds of a £190 bill. I don't know if the management, kitchen or serving staff have changed but this was well below par. We are currently reserved about whether or not we will return. I suppose I'll wait until (if at all) the pub replies to this review. Word of warning....

A mistake I will not make again, I can't express how disappointed I am, being a local from the area, this would be one of the places I would have recommended but unfortunately it's just a tourist trap. I took my in law's to Pier 36 for food, but I will never be back, the worst service I have ever experienced. We said we were in for food, no one came near us with menus, the only people that came near us were to stand on the sofas we were seated at to try and turn on the TV above us, after 3 failed attempts a staff member had said 'you'll have to wait' to locals in for a pint, honestly we didn't mind but the tone it was said in I wasn't pleased (we were clearly an inconvenience to you's), after 20mins we had to ask for menus, two pints in and still no one had taken our order, we also had to ask for our table to be wiped (which may I add where they seated us at), but yes barely wiped and with a dirty cloth, I honestly couldn't wait to leave the place, if I was alone I would have walked out. Once we received our food, we weren't checked on to see if everything was ok (where I would have said actually it's not the best, giving you's a chance to remedy the issue, but unfortunately no). As soon as we finished no one came near us to clear or check on us, in all honesty considered walking out at this point, and honestly I don't think any staff member would have noticed but I went to pay for the bill, another opportunity for staff to ask well how was everything for you?, but unfortunately no, here is your bill, so my last resort is leaving this review and my future disgust...

The service was an absolute 5 star! Our table was shaky, a staff member noticed this and brought beer mats which fixed it instantly! We orders two pints, they took a while so the staff apologised 3 or 4 times and explained they needed to switch the keg over, not their fault at all but the communication was so good we were not worried about when the pints came, plus we hadn’t even been waiting long. We ordered the largest steaks on the menu as a group and they had told us it would take a while due to what we ordered, they offered complimentary bread for the table while the steaks were cooking. Now, when the steaks arrived…. Oh my goodness the flavour was unreal, cooked perfectly with a lovely red wine jus and didn’t even take as long as they thought. We paid for the bill and they didn’t ask for a tip which made it a nicer process and I left saying the service, food and everything else was perfect! A great meal, will be back!

Now to clarify my scores a little here. I knew when I booked I was staying in a pub run guest house. The only low point for me was the room. It wasn't expensive, it was perfectly clean, and I had a great night sleep. But for me it was a little dated. I would stay here again without any hesitation, but a little work even in the ensuite would really elevate it. The breakfast in the morning was great, with really good service. A proper big Ulster fry, just what I needed after the night before. It was still being used as a film set for the BBC, so some of the signage was.... interesting. There was ample off street parking at the rear, beside Copeland Distillery. A nice little beer garden out the back.

I haven't been here in over 10 years and it hasn't changed much at all. Looks like it needs a good bit of tlc, maybe a fresh lick of paint on outside of building and a deep clean inside. This is the bar that features in the TV programme 'Hopestreet', so I was surprised how small the bar area looks in real life! We didn't eat here this time just had drinks so cannot comment on food, but we could hear (what seemed like a senior) female member of staff being a little forth right with the younger staff members when they appeared to have everything under control and looked calm to me. This made for a strange atmosphere. I felt a bit uncomfortable. Don't think we will be back.
