The Bull & Claw Donaghadee — Restaurant in Northern Ireland

Couldn't fault my experience here. Had a fantastic starter of a seafood chowder. Absolutely georgeous for a starter and rather filling itself. Honestly one of my most enjoyed starters I've ever had which I certainly didn't expect from a pub restaurant. Quite modern yet cosy decor. Questionable music choice, very varied and quite strange songs were playing throughout the restaurant including a bit of Robbie Williams, Blue and Mariah Carey. Not what I was expecting. Main course was definitely above average and from 4 different mains we had between us, the old classic steak burger funnily enough seemed the most impressive, whilst the others were all still very nice. We never had dessert as the starter and main were so filling themselves, so I cannot comment on that as of yet however I will definitely be returning here again so may update! Staff were very attentive and friendly, can get quite busy but there is still a very nice amount of space between the tables so you never feel crammed. Our reservation was made for 7pm on Wednesday 18th July 2018. My sister and I arrived around 6.40pm but as the place was not overly busy we were seated immediately in front of the woodturner. When we were given the menus we were, much to my surprise, a number of the dishes were not available ( disappointing as my sister was looking forward to the pork belly!) Whilst waiting on our order a few people left to smoke directly outside the front door, the smoke wafted into the restaurant and the smell was strong enough inside to remind me of the days when smoking was permitted inside bars, not good! First time trying here and I must say from the moment we walked in the doors we were greeted warmly our server was very welcoming, helpful and provided an excellent service throughout our meal. (sorry I didn’t catch his name) The food arrived warm with generous sized portions. I had the salted chilli starter, this was enough for two people. I then had a steak which was cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious the triple cooked chips were also very tasty, my only negative was the mash potatoes as they were very lumpy and a little watery so I didn’t really eat them but the dessert was also great.
