This is the best Indian food in Norwich. When I order from them, I start salivating and wait at the door for my delivery like a pathetic dog. These guys are good.
I’ve tried a lot of Indian places in Norwich and although Merchant of Spice is a pretty close second, no other even comes close for value, fragrance and flavor. Rishi has been a consistent source of incredibly delicious Indian food, at reasonable prices, for at least 8 years. I think their chef won national awards right around the time I discovered them. I ate there every time I visited my my mum in Sprowston and now that she’s moved to the city centre, I still order delivery from Rishi - it’s THAT good.
Let’s talk about the special fried rice. Perfectly fragranced with cardamom that adds a delightful sweetness and sets off the curries wonderfully. The dal, a dish so easily made second rate, is complex, a little smoky and spicy but deep and full of flavour. It’s my favorite dish. I also love the sag paneer, which is quite a dry dish that works well with a saucy curry or the dips that Rishi supplies with poppadoms.
I always get chapatis and Rishi makes these soft and floury but stretchy with just-the-right moisture level at the same time. Best I’ve had in Norwich, hands down. I have enjoyed the fish and chicken dishes over the years and my mum loves the King Prawn Ceylon.
The only thing Rishi could improve is the samosa options. Their samosas are the spring roll wrapper type, which I’ve never seen in S Asia. I wish they could offer the kind that is wrapped in basically a chapati and fried. Mmmmmm!
Hats off the the entire team for consistently getting from a phone call placing the order to the front door in the city centre in under an hour and often within 45 mins. Delivery guy uses a cooler and the food is always well-packaged and piping hot. Never even broken a poppadom en route.
So glad that Rishi continues to thrive. Eating their food is a highlight of any visit to Norwich. It’s not just great Indian food, it’s an all-round top restaurant in my book. If you get the chance to dine in, it’s also a pretty cool...
Read moreOne I was looking forward to as it has an award winning chef. Poppadums as you would expect, but goods signs as the lime pickle was homemade. Onion Bhaji. Light crisp and golden. Fried in clean oil. Rice. I had special fried. Quality rice used. Naan Bread. Crisp light and thinner than normal. Nice. We wanted all 4 varieties in one, but they limited us to just two. What we ended up with was filled with a fine donner meat type stuff. Again nice.
Then we get to our mains. Oh dear, My friends jalfrezi is about as hot as tomato soup! and as tasty. Even though he orders it vindaloo hot! He is not impressed.
My Lamb rogan should be medium, but again all I can think off is tom soup! The lamb is tender, but even if I forgive the lack of heat, a hard thing to do as we are eating curry! There is nothing aromatic spicy or really tasty.
A fine meal with average service in an old pub that still looks like a pub. Anyone making the transition from say, french cuisine would do well here. Those that only eat mild curries, but want to try others would be happy. The food had a level of refinement you don't find with this type of fare, but Indian food is peasant food and I would rather suffer cheap rice and greasy bhajis and get a flavoursome spicy meal that I get with all other curry houses.
Price was as expected, but for the quality of the food it is very very reasonable.
Btw I am a very experienced fully trained and very...
Read moreWe frequently dine in the restaurant and the food is normally wonderful. We thought tonight we would dine at home and order a take away and we thought we would recieve the same quality of food. This was more expensive than the normal take away we normally use but we thought that would be really worth it and we would change to Rishi for our normal take away provider. When we recieved the takeaway the lookand taste was very disappointing, the chicken tikka masala had 2 pieces of meat and was watery as was the dansak, normally it has a stoggy texture tonight it was once again watery and had no flavour. We had chiken tikka starter which normally has chunks of meat. tonight tiny slithers. and once again no colour or flavour. The garlic chick once again only had around 2 slices of meat and was watery. I wonder if the chef has changed and if so does this mean this is the normal standard you will receive eating there? Hense to say I think in future we will be visiting either take away or dine in the spice lounge or merchants of coegate to ensure food quality. Tonight we wasted nearly £40.00 on food we...
