A Gem in Oldham: The Farrars Arms (4.5 stars) Tucked away in Oldham, The Farrars Arms is a hidden gem that shouldn't be missed. With a rating of 4.5 stars, it's no surprise this place is a local favorite. My experience certainly lived up to the hype!
First Impressions: The pub itself has a charming atmosphere. It balances a traditional pub feel with a modern touch, creating a warm and inviting space. The staff were fantastic from the get-go. Friendly and attentive, they made us feel welcome and helped navigate the menu. Be warned though, booking a table is a must! The place was buzzing on a weeknight, so planning ahead is key.
Food for the Soul: Onto the main event - the food! The menu offered a great selection of dishes, with something to please every palate. I opted for the pepperoni pizza, and it was absolutely delicious. The ingredients were fresh and high-quality, and the flavors were perfectly balanced. My friends went for the Rag pudding and the Cheese and Bacon burger, they were equally impressed. The portions were generous without being overwhelming, leaving us perfectly satisfied.
A Memorable Evening: Overall, The Farrars Arms exceeded expectations. The delicious food, friendly service, and lively atmosphere made for a truly enjoyable evening. A word of advice: definitely book a table in advance, and be prepared to be impressed! This is a place I'll definitely be revisiting soon.
Minor Nibble: The only slight downside was having to book in advance due to how busy they were. While it's a testament to their popularity, it might not be ideal for those who prefer a more spontaneous dining experience.
Final Verdict: Despite needing a reservation, The Farrars Arms is a must-try for anyone in the Oldham area. With fantastic food, friendly staff, and a great atmosphere, it's easy to see why it's a local favorite. 4.5 stars out of 5!

Read moreWent on a Tuesday Lunch. It was cold inside. The tables and chairs are like old school tables and it doesnt look very welcoming. Maybe just some little vases on the tables with a flower to give a bit of colour might make it feel a bit more inviting?
We were given menus including a lunch menu with various dishes at £6. We ordered a tea and a coffee. The tea came and I was constantly stirring the tea to realise it was a herbal teabag! I asked if we could change it and the boy behind the bar said he didnt even know that they served herbal tea! At which point the chef came out to get some beer (for the fish batter I presume?) and said "oh yes they are all mixed in with the normal teabags apparently)!"
We ordered off the lunch menu as we werent starving (which was a good job really)! My hubby had the fish and chips which was a very small portion and I had sausage n mash which was also small... 2 sausages with very thin gravy and mushy peas running into the gravy, served on a plate which looked like I used to get my school dinners on.
A bit disappointing to be honest.
Maybe I was expecting something a bit like the other picture which has 3 large cumberland sausages, rich onion gravy and fresh veg... presented in a nice bowl (which is only £5.95 in another pub) 😕
Maybe serve the mushy peas in a ramekin? Or serve the gravy in a jug?
Just my opinion... I think I was expecting more given the history of the pub and the area it is in. Maybe it just needs a few tweaks to make it feel welcoming and present the food a bit better? A few flowers, colourful cushions? Also it would be good to make sure the staff are doing check backs. Had he come back I would have asked for some mustard for my sausages but he was in the kitchen chatting to the chef because there was no-one...
Read moreWe were trying to find places to eat in Saddleworth and the Farrars was recommended. We visited twice in a few days. We called and booked ahead of time, I don't know how necessary it was, but the times we arrived there was space. Best to be sure. The choice of food, for a pub menu is nice. Some good, hearty options. The service was friendly and helpful both times. The choice of beers and wines is standard pub stuff. I feel a pub is made by its staff, and they were quick with drinks and requests, glasses cleared quick. If you're after a good pub experience, you have it right here.
As for the food, I had the Steak and Ale pie the first visit, the Cheese and Onion the second. They were both delicious, great tasting and good value. The chunky chips were a little undercooked, but nothing inedible. My wife had the fish and chips the first time, her fish was a little too greasy, but the batter was crisp. The slightly undercooked chips bothered her more. On the second visit, she chose the burger. This was a mistake. The burger was not good, it was basically a meatloaf (minced beef with onions ) and had a steamed like texture to it rather than a grilled burger. Considering the other food and the clear talent in the kitchen, odd choice not to try and make a decent burger.
A friend with us had the Buffalo wings. These were, by all accounts, incredible. The wings looked fresh, and very meaty. Also, the pizzas were great value, nice and fresh and didn't scrimp on ingredients.
When I'm next in the area, the Farrars will definitely be on the list of...
