From start to finish it was disappointing. We booked online a couple of weeks ago, we didn’t hear anything back so called today and the staff weren’t aware of the booking. We sat down at half 6 and was told we cannot order carvery, maybe 1 or 2. 8 people are carvery after us. Ordered starters and mains, the starters took at least 45 minutes to arrive. Had to ask for the wine menu twice. After waiting another 45 minutes the mains started to arrive (staggered). I and another one of our party ordered smoked haddock, what arrived was bland white fish (definitely not smoked) with mash, spinach and a poached (sloppy) egg. One person ordered a prawn salad. A salad with 5 very small prawns arrived. Another ordered a pie with a gravy. Gravy didn’t come. The burger, chicken and baguette we also ordered were adequate however the person who ordered the burger asked for sweet potato fries and got normal fries, chicken did not come with a basket. After complaining we were offered to take the haddock off the bill. We then explained there were multiple issues with the food. We were kindly offered a round of drinks as an apology, we refused as we wanted to pay and leave. We were then offered a round of drinks off the bill. We accepted. What initially came off the bill were a few beers, one gin and tonic (two people were drinking this) and a gravy boat. Having to then complain about this again the other drinks were taken off. One of the waiters mentioned they have had problems with the kitchen all day. The lady who took our second complaint was rude as we were asking why a gravy boy was taken off with a round of drinks. Having heard good things about this establishment previously we were bitterly disappointed with our visit and sadly will not be returning and recommending our friends and family to...
Read moreMy husband and I went for a meal on Friday evening 8th Feb 2019. we were taken into the dining area, we ordered our wine a sauvignon blanc, which was placed on the table for my husband to pour, I have to say it was the worst wine I have tasted, it didn't taste like a sauvignon and quite honestly wouldn't have put it on my chips. My husband took it home to drink with lemonade. the starter was ok, you cant go wrong with bruschetta and Pate, while waiting for our main meal, I complained as to how cold it was, there was not a drop of heating on, there were 2 couples eating with their coats on and the family next to me ended up moving straight after their meal as the children were cold. "NOTHING WAS DONE ABOUT THIS". our main meal came, fish &* chips for my husband and salmon with salad with a side of Garlic & herb butter sauce. The sauce looked like congealed butter and tasted awful, salmon was just okay and the salad consisted of a mound of lettuce, slice of cucumber and a quarter of tomato, my husbands chips were undercooked, pale and hard. I did at the end complain and the starters were cancelled off the bill, but the meal was still just short of £40 for something we couldn't eat or drink. we went home, cold, hungry and very disappointed. we will definitely not set foot in there again, nor will any of my friends or family. I am in business myself, so I know how to treat people, give them a warm welcome and give them the service that they are paying hard...
Read moreSunday 29/01/23. Plus points. Could accommodate a large number of us (plus dogs) for the Sunday cavery. Staff helpful and friendly even when we had to rearrange the timings on the day of the booking. So that's all good.
The standard carvery has a set price or, as an additional offering, an optional chargeable 'go large' upgrade to a larger portion. However, on ordering two caverys, I was given the price, and then I decided to 'go large' on one of them, but was told that both already were large caverys. So, it appears the server had decided that we were having the optional add-ons without us requesting them. Now, I could have stopped him and requested standard versions, but let it slide as this was going to be the only meal of the day. I would expect the standard variant to be the default, or at least be asked the question. It does smack of a bit of sharp practice on the pub's part. Also, and I suspect this may be down to the brewery, JW Lees, but how does 1/2 pint of Coke cost £2.40, when a pint costs £2.90? I may not be the best mathematician, but would expect a 1/2 pint to cost roughly 1/2 of a full pint (i. e. 50%), and not 82% of the cost of a pint.
Overall, good food and service, however I would be more careful about how and what I was ordering...
