I recently spent an evening at The Golden Hind on Mannamead Road, and came away mostly impressed. It strikes a great balance between relaxed local pub and solid food & drink venue — ideal for meeting friends, family dinners, or just stopping by for a pint.
The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. There are two main areas: a livelier bar side, good for watching sport or social catch-ups, and a quieter restaurant/lounge side, more suited to meals or chatting without too much noise. Staff are friendly and helpful — I saw them accommodating dietary needs (gluten free, etc.) which is always appreciated.
Food is generally good pub fare: burgers, classic mains, vegetarian & vegan options, and a proper Sunday roast with all the trimmings. Portions are decent, presentation is reasonable, and service is prompt when busy. There are also regular deals and good value options which make it more affordable without feeling budget.
On the flip side, when it gets busy (especially evenings or on match days) noise levels rise and finding a quiet table becomes harder. The bar side can feel cramped, and occasionally some menu items are unavailable — which is a bit disappointing.
Facilities are decent: free off-street parking, dog-friendly policy, clean toilets, and good decorative touches.
Overall, The Golden Hind delivers well for what it is: a friendly neighbourhood pub with solid food, good drink selection, and a sociable vibe. I’d rate it 4 out of 5 stars — well worth a visit, especially if you’re after relaxing...
Read moreThe barman was warm and friendly with a chirpy demeanour, served us promptly and with professionalism. Can't fault the staff. The pub feels a bit run down, but I think they are trying to go for the "local pub vibe" rather than the country pub I am used to. Maybe not my cup of tea, but people seemed happy with it. So good for them, it does help with the friendly staff on hand.
The food was very reasonably priced which attracted us there as we were in a rush on our way home, and it was cooked and delivered quickly. The chicken shawarma flatbread was really tasty, but what let the whole experience down was the feeling of greasiness I had afterwards.
Having calories printed on the menu was a good idea, but some people on restrictive diets may require more detailed macronutrients which was impossible to find even on the internet.
Long story short, if you're local, you'll enjoy it, if you're passing by and need somewhere to eat, you won't leave hungry or paying a second mortgage. But I wouldn't rate it as a quality food establishment.
If I needed to, I would eat there again, but only on my way home so I can have a...
Read moreI booked a wake for an elderly relative. Didn’t know how many people would attend a 96 year old’s funeral. Met the manager Nick who was so helpful, not pushy and made some really helpful suggestions. So booked and after the funeral we used the room set aside for us which was great. We had selected the food beforehand from a varied buffet menu. We arrived early but no problem for a Maddie the assistant manager. She served the food when we requested and she did so with a smile. I was expecting rather ordinary quality of food but was surprised that what Maddie served was so excellent and in such large quantities. One of our guests owns and runs four fish and chip shops and he praised the quality of the chips. I thought the chips were the best I have tasted for years. Drinks were fairly priced and the coffee was better than many coffee shops. Nothing was too much trouble for Maddie and her team. They even gave us doggy bags to take some of the left over food away with us. Fantastic service, value and all done with a...
