Four of us ate a Sunday afternoon meal.
We had booked for 1.30 pm, so the place was more or less full when we arrived. Nevertheless, we were swiftly greeted and seated. Front of house staff were attentive but not intrusive. They were friendly, prepared to engage in a little banter, and happy to take a photo of us when asked.
My three friends ordered vegan falafel burgers with sweet potato fries. I went for the huevos mexicanos, which came with frijoles, salsa, quacamole, and flat bread; not a conventional Mexican tortilla but nonetheless very tasty. We all thought the food was excellent. My eggs were cooked to perfection.
Lime Wharf Cafe is a great place for parties of a dozen or more, so long as you book in advance. As it is the eatery for an adjacent campsite, it can be very busy in the warm summer months. However, there is a large area of outdoor seating to accommodate the additional guest.
Last year, I booked a two-hour cruise on the Rother from Lime Wharf and a table for twelve on our return. We were a party of mixed ages from 1 to 65, and everybody said just how much they had enjoyed the experience.
I would definitely...
Read moreI've eaten in restaurants all over the world, sampled haute cuisine and flatter myself that I can tell good food from bad. The meal I enjoyed at the Lime Wharf Cafe yesterday lunchtime was one of the most memorable meals I've had anywhere. Fast and attentive service, scenic and comfortable outside dining, generous portions (indeed my wife and I had to ask the kitchen to wrap up the remnants to go). A sublime mixture of quality and quantity. The squid was tender, the salads crisp and the fries plenty 'dirty'. They included a 10% service charge with my bill, I'm not sure if this is normal practice, i had planned to tip more than that, so they unwittingly short changes themselves.
I'm in half a mind to keep this all to myself, so this restaurants prowess remains a secret, and is not deluged by other diners, but credit where credit is due. Keep up the good work, I've almost resigned myself to mediocre - poor experiences while dining out in England, however with the Lime Wharf Cafe there is hope! We'll see you today and this time we'll bring our children. Many thanks for the...
Read moreNice venue, nice staff, bad management and rude owners. It would have been a nice visit but all three times I've been here, the head staff have been rude. The man in particular is very passive aggressive. I enquired about camping but was told in a dismissive manner, by the female owner that "its all on the website". It's expensive camping here and the toilets were emptied via a big truck at 10am!!! All the campers were holding their noses and the smell was awful. I mentioned this to the man at the till (grey hair), and I suggested maybe they do it in the afternoon, not breakfast time - he told me it was inconvenient for them. They gave my son something to colour in but the pencils they provided were all blunt, broken and barely usable. The wrong order came to our table - the waitress checked and told me that's what I'd ordered. Then the chef popped his head round the corner and told her it was the wrong table. The right order took a while to arrive. The service charge was added to the bill but I asked for them to remove this. I will not be returning. Very...
