Sadly disappointed. Book well in advance as it is popular. We booked for Father's Day. I emailed to book and got a reply straight away. So very efficient. Arrived on the day, it was a very busy service. Seated promptly and given the menu. Mine was so badly printed that I couldn't read it. Then when I did read my husband's it was then I realised that the price had gone up due to it being Father's Day. Which I do understand, however, there was no mention of this on the website or when I booked.
We found the lady who waited on us a bit snippy, it was a hot day and she was busy. But a smile helps.
To the main event the food. The starters were fine, I had pate, husband and mother-in-law had mushrooms, daughter had prawn cocktail. Being a Sunday lunch fan, the meat was fabulous, tasty and plentiful.
My daughter loves sausage and their homemade ones didn't disappoint, again very good and too many to count.
The roasts were soggy, mash not good, carrots ok the cabbage was nice, good Yorkshire pud and gravy.
Pudding was again just ok, we had summer pudding, the ice cream machine wasn't working, husband had chocolate cake which again was ok.
I suppose you may read this and say Why are you disappointed. When you are spending so much per head you expect great service and excellent food. It was ok, parts were very tasty (meat and sausage) but would I go again, no. At over £40 a head when you include drinks.
We hadn't been for over 30 years and I suppose we expected it to be as you remembered. Though the decor hasn't changed.
Must mention the chap who was carving was very jolly and you could tell he was passionate about his meat. I think he is the owner.
I know you can't please everyone and mine is only an opinion. I have a high standard when it comes to a Sunday lunch, not many...
Read moreFirst of all i have to say the food was nice, but vastly overpriced. A roast dinner with drinks is nearly £70 for two people. I dont really understand why you cant just order the roast, you have to have three courses and i ended up leaving my pudding as i couldnt eat it. Its either three courses or nothing. I have had better food elsewhere for half the price. My second gripe is the service was soooooo slow. We were there for over half an hour before a drink or starters was delivered and then they had to be reminded we were there. The queue for the carvery was ok, but again waiting for dessert, an ice cream and a brownie was another half an hour. Trying to catch anyone's attention was nigh on impossible. So we gave up on trying to get a second drink. Theyre trying to serve a busy Sunday lunch and also field a long queue for take out orders. Maybe try cutting down the number of tables or the vast amount of takeaways and you might get some decent service. All i heard for the two and a half hours we were there is 'sorry for the wait' at a lot of the tables. The food is neither value for money or tasty enough for...
Read moreWe used to visit the Huntsman for special occasions and decided to book it for our Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve as we have great memories of the place. What a disappointment. While the food was good, the service was dreadful. Lots of younger staff who weren’t interested and stood around avoiding eye contact while we cleared our own plates. Dinner plates were still in place on the table when they took the dessert order and then tried to serve it, so they had to take dessert back and clear the table. No drinks orders taken. And unfortunately it was dirty with horribly sticky tables and a real shabby feel to the whole place. A real shame as our family has many lovely memories of visiting to mark birthdays and special occasions over the years, but it feels stuck in a time warp (not in a good way - more a haven’t bothered to spend any money on the place way). While I understand they have a particular look and atmosphere to maintain, I think they do need to invest in the decor, cutlery, carpets etc as it all makes for a very cheap feeling environment. Won’t be...
