This is going to be a very critical review I'm afraid. The service was shocking, it took almost 1.5 hours from sitting down to getting the mains, the starters were left finished on the table for well over 20 minutes and when I said to a passing waitress we had finished them and had been waiting a long time to have them cleared it took at least another 10 minutes before I caught the eye of the manager and she eventually cleared them. Drinks again took around 20 minutes to arrive from sitting down to to arriving. Now on to the food, my Sea Bass and mash was awful, I ate it but my god it was bad, look at the photo for to see the presentation. Then on to the mash, it was like baby food, well over processed and the overall quality of the dish was shocking. My two friends had beef roasts and the beef was overcooked and extremely chewy. I'm told the fish and chips was alright, I wish I had chosen that, but when I go out, I like to have something I can't get easily from say a fish and chip shop or cook myself at home... When I mentioned the time issues with the manager, she tried to justify why we would be waiting 1.5 hours. Then when I explained the waitress had ignored us and the starters were left empty on the table for ages she said she would look into it. Later £10 was deducted from the bill, on a £130 bill, for 4 people, when seeing friends we hadn't seen for months, this isn't compensation enough for such a poor level of service and dining experience, hence my very critical review. My friends had selected deserts the night before but chose not to have them based on what we had gone on, and have eaten there a couple of times before and said it's been ok so not sure what went wrong... I for one, will not be returning. In response to your reply, the restaurant wasn't particularly busy (4pm) with lots of empty tables, and when I said to the manager we had been waiting a long time for our mains and had asked for the starters to be cleared already, she tried to justify this and basically say I was in the wrong, so why would I then complain about the fish that had been thrown on the plate, with baby food mash potatoes and overcooked broccoli - further embarrassing my friends who had booked and recommended your establishment? Reading other critical reviews on Tripadvisor I'm not the only guest to get poor service recently, it seems excuse after excuse at Dun Cow - just elevate the customer experience from start to finish. And no, we won't be giving you another go after what we experienced today...

From the moment I arrived at The Dun Cow Inn, I knew I’d stumbled upon something special. Tucked away in the heart of Rugby, this place is more than just a pub with rooms, it’s a genuine home away from home. I stayed for a couple of nights and honestly didn’t want to leave. The accommodation was spotless, cozy, and full of character, exactly what you’d hope for in a historic inn. My room was peaceful, well-appointed, and had one of the most comfortable beds I’ve slept in while travelling. Every little detail had clearly been thought through. But what truly sets The Dun Cow apart is the people. The staff were incredible, warm, welcoming, and genuinely attentive without ever feeling overbearing. From the bar team to the servers in the restaurant, everyone had a smile and a moment for a chat, which really made all the difference. And then there’s the manager! What an absolute credit to the place. Friendly, approachable, and clearly passionate about what they do. They made the rounds checking in on guests, always ensuring everything was up to standard. It’s rare to see that level of personal touch these days, and it didn’t go unnoticed. The food? Outstanding. I had dinner both nights and was blown away. The steak was cooked to perfection, and the sticky toffee pudding should be famous it’s that good. Breakfast was equally impressive, with generous portions and top-notch quality. All in all, The Dun Cow Inn offers the full package: excellent food, comfortable lodging, and a team that genuinely cares. I left feeling well-rested, well-fed, and thoroughly looked after. I can’t recommend it enough and will absolutely be back.

We had a lovely late lunch here today. It took us ages to choose food and drinks because all of the options sounded delicious. I highly recommend the house sodas. I went with passion fruit flavour. We had the chicken pie, beef brisket sandwich and children's tomato penne. I'm really impressed by how well accommodated our little boy (aged 15 months) was. The highchair was very secure and clean. The penne was half sized and cooked quite soft, there was a big enough portion to feed a child of around 8years in my opinion but definitely safe for a toddler to eat. They provided us with a separate cold plate so we could put some of his pasta and veggies on it to cool down to toddler safe temperatures. Our food was delicious, I especially liked the beef dripping sauce with my sandwich. I'm sad we didn't get to try any of the puddings but my child was at the limit of how long he can be quiet for and figured it would be inconsiderate to other diners if I subjected them to a shouting infant so I could get some cake. The decor is lovely and the staff were friendly. My husband informs me he took 4 previous partners here also so safe to say he gives it 5 stars and a "will definitely come back" sort of rating too. 🤣 I think it is a flexible pub, good for a family meal or a date night!

Dear Duncow Management,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express my disappointment regarding a recent dining experience at your restaurant. Unfortunately, we faced several issues that affected our overall enjoyment.

Firstly, the food served to us was lukewarm at best, which was quite disappointing as we were looking forward to a hot and delicious meal.

Additionally, the salad we ordered was missing the dressing which not only affected its flavor but also left us unsatisfied. When the salad was brought to our table, we were informed that this had been mentioned before we placed our order, but we certainly weren't made aware of that. As a side note, the ciabatta that was meant to accompany my meal was also missing, which further detracted from my overall experience.

Moreover, we were informed that there were no baked beans available for my child's meal, which was a letdown, especially since it is a standard component. We also noticed that the katsu curry item listed on your menu was unavailable when we were placing our order, and when I inquired about the chicken panang curry on your specials board, the staff was unsure whether it was an option.

Finally, the wait time between our meals arriving to the table was excessively long, leaving us feeling frustrated and neglected. The delays detracted from our dining experience and made us feel as if our concerns were not adequately addressed.

Given these issues, we truly felt that we did not receive value for money, especially with our bill totaling £151. We had hoped for a pleasant dining experience, but unfortunately, it fell short due to the slow service and various menu discrepancies.

I understand that busy lunchtimes can pose challenges, but I believe it’s essential for restaurants to communicate effectively with their guests and ensure that orders are...

Came here as part of a group of 8 for a leaving do. We got seated relatively quickly and once everyone had arrived, we ordered. Some of us ordered off the weekend treat menu (3 courses) while most of us got a main or starter+main off the regular menu.

The starters came out pretty quickly (only 3 of us had ordered them). The mains.. not so much. They took roughly an hour to come out in a pretty jumbled mess. One of us had ordered risotto with mussels, but the rice was crunchy. Not wanting to risk it (it containing sea food and all), he asked if he could get a new one. This would take ~20 minutes, so he opted for a medium-rare steak instead.

I myself had ordered a side of sweet potato fries with my main. I had to remind the waitress that I had, she said it was on its way. Some 10-15 minutes later I got them, long after most of us, including myself, had finished our mains. They were piping hot and had clearly just been made.

This is when the manager came and told us he'd knock a round of drinks off the bill, and if we ordered desserts, he'd make sure they'd get made right away (the waitress told us it'd be a ~25 minute wait for desserts at first). All but 2 of us proceeded to get desserts.

After our desserts we had a really small cake we wanted to share, so we asked for some plates. Keep in mind, we're a group of eight. We were brought 4 small plates and a saucer, and were asked if we wanted more plates - we said to just leave it.

Paying went smoothly, although the waitress brought us exact change (probably assumed we would've demanded it) and then we left. We had a barrell of laughs about all the stuff that went wrong and how absurd it was, though, and the pizza was good.

Too long; didn't read: go here for...
