This place is a Greenock institution - it’s been here for years. The food is ok, the drinks are fine, the service is ok. A few mistakes were made with orders but these were quickly solved. I used to adore the open steak sandwich but it’s not the same quantity of steak as it was (but then…this was about 20 years ago, so no wonder it’s changed). It does well because of a lack of other options in the area. West Blackhall Street is looking very run-down these days. Not the best place I’ve ever been to, but not the worst. A solid choice if you’re in the area.

Went last night with friends for meal. Usually I extensively pure 8 plan every meal out due to being vegan but thought I'd just hope for the best, thankfully they had a couple of options! For the starter I had bruschetta, followed by a superfood salad minus the dressing with fries on the side. It was really tasty, price was reasonable, splitting the bill between 7 it was £17 with a drink as well. Service was pretty fast and it's lovely inside. Would definitely go back.

Had a nice meal here. Wife had scampi and chips and I had the Caesar salad served with chicken and bacon which had proper chicken and not reconstituted. Staff helpful and friendly. Some customers didn't seem able to read the signage, masks, signing in etc which ultimately is owners responsibility however as we head out of LD this may be less significant to some. Anyway nice experience overall

Always have a pleasant experience at cafe balfe, foods always great the desserts are up there with the best I've tasted and the portion of loaded fries was incredible, best I've seen! My only slight complaint is that the gin with lemonade I ordered arrived in a very small, thin glass (unsure what kind of glass as it wasn't a gin glass or a wine one) and for the price paid, it doesn't last long at all. It also felt like the lemonade isn't served cold? So gin was quite warm tasting. Neithertheless my lasagne was amazing and staff were lovely! Defo be back soon. it's sad as I feel a lot of people forget about this wee gem...

A hidden gem,in West blackhall St, what a find this was. Good interior with great furnishings and friendly staff,we ordered breakfast just before the cut-off point of 1200,big portions with not so big prices!!! I don't know where you will get a full breakfast ,all the good stuff, for under £8. Plenty other breakfast items on the menu, if not a big appetite. Fully licensed, and operates ,breakfast, lunch, and evening meal, with a great selection at all servings, with all the classics on the menu. Staff were on hand without being too fussy, very pleasant. Will need to be back soon, too. Try...

I had a steak pie, veg and mash. The atmosphere was nice and very clean. the tables though, although lovely, they can be a bit big/bulky and too close to the built in chairs (on wall), me and partner both knocked our knees on the table leg when sitting down. And the elderly man sitting next to us found it difficult to get up because of this. However though, what I overheard the waitress say to the elderly man was that he didn't have to pay his bill as an anonymous customer already had paid for it! I thought this was SO lovely and never heard that before. Disappointed no one paid for our meal...
