Came here with friends for dinner on Saturday and really enjoyed it. The staff were well really friendly, efficient and professional. But most important was the food which was excellent! I had the Arancini to start. Four small perfectly formed balls with perfectly cooked rice, cheese and peas, and served with a really nice tomato sauce. My main was the 'Tre Stagioni' pizza which was very big, and made up of toppings from three different pizzas. I'm used to eating sourdough pizzas with thick puffy soft crusts so I was initially a bit disappointed when the pizza arrived as the crust looked small and crunchy. However, as soon as I tasted it I realised I shouldn't have judged it by looks alone as it was a really really good crust. Crunchy on the outside but really soft and doughy inside. It also had a very large amount of toppings on which were all really lovely as well. The pizza was a pleasure to eat and I was very full by the time I finished it! Everyone else has desserts but I was too full so just had a latte. I drink a lot of lattes and would say this was one of the best I've ever had. Guessing it was really good quality coffee beans but it had a really lovely taste. (The strawberry cheesecake my friends had looked amazing and they said it tasted as good as it looked) Highly recommend this place and we will definitely be back!

Visited during a family trip to Edinburgh on our last day after a long outing, and we wanted a nice, hearty meal. Found this place on Google Maps — it came up among the top Italian spots. My son wanted Italian, so we tried the carbonara in two versions: the Roman style (less creamy) and the regular style, both with pancetta. Both were tasty, though I personally preferred the Roman version a little more. We also ordered mussels — I enjoyed them, but the rest of the family thought they were just okay. The Quattro pizza came loaded with cheese, which I loved, though my wife found the blue cheese a bit overpowering. We also tried another soup and the risotto (special of the day) — the risotto was a bit underwhelming compared to the rest. We skipped wine and alcohol since it was late, but the restaurant had plenty of parking and was very quiet that evening (likely busier during the day). Overall, a good Italian spot with some standout dishes, especially the carbonara.

Visited during a work event day out and was unaware there was a restaurant in this location. Crolla's is off the beaten track of Musselburgh town centre and I wouldn't be aware of a restaurant where it's situated. It was booked for our work day out hence the visit. It's a nice place, food and service good and didn't disappoint. I had pepperoni and mushroom pizza, I'm not keen on Italian style pizza with the larger crust, however this is personal preference and nothing wrong with it. The topping was tasty but I do wish I had chosen the pasta as others looked nice. Dessert was pistachio cheesecake as pictured and very tasty. Our waitress was great and joined in with the fun of one of our crowd also making sure we were fine for anything required. I'm not from the area or I'd visit again, however now I know it's here would book if in the area again.

The restaurant is stunning, such a beautiful building and setting. It was a Sunday so quiet which was nice. The Fridays and Saturdays can be very busy which is also nice depending on what you like. Service was friendly and professional. Great selection of wines and drinks in general. I wasn't so keen on the choice of music for the setting but the volume was perfect. To eat we started with the soughdough bread and 3 toppings to share. Was exactly what it said. It was very tasty and I would for sure have it again. For my main, I had the mushroom risotto which was nice, lacked a tiny bit in flavour and was literally rice and mushroom so I ordered a side of rocket leaf to add something green. Not complaining, it's an Italian restaurant so you don't find greens much but just felt it could have had something a little more with it. My partner had breaded butterfly chicken with spaghetti, the spaghetti part was small he said and wasn't enough for his chicken but all in all still nice dish. We finished with the cheese board which was a nice selection of cheeses but had to request more crackers as they didn't give many for the board, these were an extra change. The honey on the cheese board was your standard runny honey, would be nice to have some local honey or something a little less sugary and more organic. Overall it was a really lovely experience, for sure I would go back. Would be perfect for a special occasion or romantic evening or just a night out for dinner. Reasonably priced for what you get. Our bottle or wine was £30 and our total bill came to £89 for two people with...

I recently booked the birdcage for my wife's surprise 30th birthday party. I made the booking a couple of months in advance and dropped by twice afterwards to discuss my food choice from their buffet menu. All seemed to be in order...

....until, 7 days before my wife's birthday I received a phone call from their manageress along the lines of "errrr, Mr. McKenzie, I have some bad news for you. We've moved forward a planned renovation to Monday and so will have to cancel your booking on Saturday. Sorry"

So I found myself with no venue for my wife's surprise 30th birthday party and 7 days in which to find an alternative. After a considerable amount of time spent calling round countless venues I did manage to find an alternative venue.

On telling this story to the guests at the party, a friend told me of how one of his work colleagues had made a reservation at the Birdcage for a client meeting, only to show up on the day to find the restaurant closed up and without a phone call of warning.

Maybe I should count myself lucky to have been given a huge 7 days notice of my cancellation? Needless to I say I won't be considering the venue for any...
