Always loved Di Maggios before the refurb. I've been a couple of times since, and it's okay, but the food isn't as good as it was in the past. Service can be patchy unless it's quiet, but a big no no for me is the automatic 8% tip they add to the bill, regardless of group size.
My most recent trip (29Jan) saw us (2 people) arrive 6pm on a Tuesday. Initial service was good - order taken quickly and the starter was out quickly.
We got the Louisiana wings to share. They were really not hot at all, and this has been the case the past few times. Really small wings too. The badass wings were legendary many years ago - very saucy, and very hot. And very painful if you had any exposed cut on your fingers. Progressively they seem to have been toned down, even before the refurb. The wings yesterday, however, were so dry with minimal sauce applied, and therefore not hot at all. Perhaps applied as a mist rather than a sauce. The plate was virtually clean afterwards such was the lack of sauce, and what was left on the plate was more watery than saucy. 10 wings each and we were still starving. The plates were taken away quickly and mains out soon after.
I had spag bol - it was great to be honest, but felt a bit stingy on the amount. While it's a deepish bowl, there wasn't much and I was done in a couple of minutes. My son had the lasagne. Like the badass wings, the lasagne was legendary in the past. Yesterday, it was reasonable. But like the newer wings it felt quite dry inside it. Taste not amazing, quite a carroty taste in my opinion, but still good enough that it was finished. Good size though - no complaints on that.
As a side note, and having had other meals as dine in and takeaway here, it does seem that anything with a sauce is given the bare minimum. I've had a few Mac and cheese (which I love) but they are a bit dry at times.
At this point we were happy enough, but it's also at this point it went a bit downhill. The restaurant was fairly busy, but there were still a good number of staff running around. We wanted dessert, but it took about 40 minutes from finishing our main to be asked. After about 20 minutes, we tried to proactively catch someone to ask for the menu, but only succeeded after some time. Maybe we need to be more bold, but it seems that rather than certain staff dealing with certain tables, it just seems like all staff deal with all tables, so it's a bit chaotic.
Dessert turned out to be nice (desserts always are) but we noticed it was sitting for a good 5 minutes on the counter and the bell was rung a few times before it was brought to us. Not great when a hot chocolate fudge cake is sitting with ice cream.
Then we got the bill, and it came with an additional 8% tip already added. There was only 2 of us, and it's happened before, and this is a bit of a no no for me - I should decide if I tip based on service and how much. It's not a tip if it's already added on. I would always tip anyway, so I didn't complain and paid it, but it's little things like that which can put a negative ending on the experience, and can override any positives from your visit. And because it's already added, it doesn't seem as appreciated when payment is taken.
In the end it was just a few pence under £70 for 2 people (including 3 drinks and the automatic tip).
Put it this way, I typically don't leave reviews for food. But I felt I should, because how can a place improve if you don't share...
Read moreWe usually love di maggios we always go for the bad ass wings which today after we ordered we recieved the most bland wings, the girl then swapped my starter after i complained . I was told the wings have a new sauce reciepe and theyve had a lot of complaints. I then got the bruchetta whick was sodden with olive oil to the point it was it was soggy also a miniscule amount balsamic vinegar and this was all under a mountqin of rocket... very untasty. We had ordered a peperoni pizza and a veggie pizza which were completely not upto the usual standard . Pizza sauce tasted cheap peperoni was thick chewy and oily and the veggie pizza was so bland as if i got it at a wee cheap snack bar. My daughter also didnt eat her mac and cheese which we were told is just a cheese sauce. It was very grainy. The staff at first were polite enough after 2 complaints to different waiters they then wouldnt make eye contact so i had to go over to the managwr myself ro make a further complaint about the pizzas. Basically got told he will speak to the head chef about the pizzas but all of dimaggios have changed certain parts of their menu now. The nachos dont even use cheese now just a cheese sauce one waitress told us. Got a refund on the adult meals. Paid for kids and drinksthey dont serve peroni anymore and the replacement was not nice. We wont be back again after years of it being our go to place with our kids , very...
Read moreI haven't been to this place in over 10 years.
I had good memories of the times there in the past and was looking forward to some of that Italian feel at home flair.
Sadly disappointed.
Given the size of the restaurant, which can easily seat 150 guests, it wasn't particularly busy-with only a few tables (24-30guests at the time), I was disappointed with the level of service, professionalism and the speed of the food arriving. Managed to have my dinner without having a drink yet there's 2 servers behind the bar not doing much...
In credit to our server, he did say it could take upto 2 hours to have food come out and it came out after 50mins, so that was faster than had been hoped.
Perhaps the kitchen was busy with just eat or deliveroo, but if a restaurant's main focus is on takeaway only, then shut the restaurant and change your business model. The rent itself can't be cheap. The car park looks as though it's for a supermarket with what looks like over 80 spaces!
The decor itself is still what it was when I last visited. Good back then but dated in terms of design and aesthetics. Its reminiscent of that old Gordon Ramsay's fish n chip shop, post WW2 era sort of thing. However it's kid friendly with a indoor play area for the kids. So kudos there.
Pity....
