We have wanted to try this place for a while after trying to get in by just turning up, but it's always busy. This time, we pre-booked a table. We parked in the street up from the pub and walked down. There was road works on the footpath in front of the pub, which directed pedestrians onto the main road, not very good as this is a busy road. We entered the pub, beware if you are tall, this pub was built years ago, so the lintles are very low. The pub is your classic fisherman's pub, all stone with wooden beams. We were taken to our table, and soon after, a server took our drinks and food order. My Cullen skink was really nice, my wife's soup tasty. Our mains were both sirloin steaks, although not on the menu our server did say there was rib eye available as well. Mine was to be well done. My wife's was medium to well. However, the server mixed these up, and we had to swap plates. My steak seemed to get pinker as I worked my way along it, so not quite well done all the way through. The chips, although salty, were good. We found it to be a bit pricey for the food that was served and the hilarity coming from the kitchen on that night probably contributed to the poorer quality of food. The servers were polite, prompt and well presented but service was let down by the mistake with the steaks. The toilets, although clean, were a bit tired looking and in need of an update. The hand wash and lotion smelled...
Read moreA really nice space and lovely staff. Had asparagus for starter (actually it's a side on the menu) which was delicious and perfectly cooked. Trout with risotto (special) for main - also very nice but I think the fish was sliiiiiightly over, probably would have been better if it were done whole but honestly it was very slight, and it was overall really enjoyable. I had ice cream for dessert. You can choose from a selection. I chose chocolate, tablet and raspberry sorbet. The tablet ice cream stood out by far as the best, really creamy and little chunks of tablet through it. Sorbet was nice. Chocolate was decent, cocoa-y but I generally (personally) prefer richer Chocolate ice cream and this wasn't, but of course that's just my preference.
Had G+T to drink: Pilgrim's from St andrews which was really good. They had a local one from Crail as well but I didn't try that one (although I have a feeling I maybe already have a bottle at home anyway).
Also nice and dog friendly, brought my dog water as priority without my asking and gave me some treats I could give her. And the floor was clean so there was nothing she could eat that might be bad for her (not always something that all 'dog friendly' places think of keeping an eye on).
Definitely coming back I can't believe I grew up nearby and the first time I go is after years of...
Read moreWe visited Dreel Tavern tonight. Been many many times beforevand enjoyed immensely. This was the first time I have been severely disappointed. The food was still excellent but the service gave a lot to be desired: there was a new waitress who was what onkllllll MInd she was being directed by another woman who insisted on telling her what to do and say in the full hearing of the diners. My husband had a long dark hair in his beer (we had to have it replaced) and despite the fact they had been closed for 2 days they hadn't ensured adequate supplies of their cask beer which had run out by the time we arrived at 7pm. They had the outside doors to both the kitchen and the beer garden open so each time someone went in or out to the kitchen or toilets there was a freezing draft going right through the dining room. Despite the fact I had booked well in advance I was also disappointed to be seated at a table right next to the kitchen. We have always been regulars of the Dreel Tavern each time we come up to Anstruther but after tonight's experience we are reconsidering whether to return. We weren't even asked when we were paying the bill whether we had enjoyed our meal or not. A huge...
