I booked Mondos this week for my sons 16th birthday. We have raved about Mondos since we first visited a few years ago and have been back several times since. We have recommended to friends, family, and colleagues because we loved the food so much, but sadly, after our visit this week, we won't be back, and we absolutely will not be recommending it again. We all ordered our usual go-to food.
Starters
My son had sizzling king prawns, which came with a slice of garlic bread. The king prawns were nice, but the garlic bread was burnt and hard to eat. My partner ordered the soup, which came with a roll that was doughy and underdone. The soup portion was noticeably smaller than our previous visit in 2023, but pleasant. I ordered the Bruschetta Pomodoro, and what came out was an absolute disgrace so much so I told them to remove it from the bill, thin as crisp bread and burnt to a crisp and flavourless thinly diced tomatoes and onions which is more like a salsa and a sad looking salad. I was actually taken aback. I handed it to the server, who said she would let the kitchen staff know. She came back 5 minutes later and asked if I wanted another, which I declined as we had all finished and waiting on mains.
Onto the mains, which again we ordered our go-to choices.
Son and partner both ordered the Braised Blade of Beef. When both dishes arrived, we could instantly see it was a different cut of meat than previous visits, and the jus was watery and see through, the veg sides had changed, and so had the mash, but the kicker for this meal was the beef. Usually, a beautifully cooked piece of meat that melted melted away. What my son and partner cut into was absolutely disgusting so much, so I told my son not to eat it. As he got to the middle, it was slimey jelly like fat, coming away in strings on the fork. It was vile, and at almost £19 per meal, it's an absolute disgrace. I had the Pepper Chicken, which has also gone downhill. Normally soft and juicy, it was dry and tough. The peppercorn sauce has changed and in place of the tenderstem broccoli was 2 small florettes that were crunchy and hard to eat. Again, at £16.50 it's not worth the premium price anymore.
We normally have the deserts but decided that was enough to put us off and leave. We paid the bill minus the bruschetta, and the total was £70 which is a lot of money for the quality and quantity drop of all the items we normally love, we sadly won't be back after all of the above. I have attached pictures for...
Read moreWent to Mondo with my two daughters to celebrate my younger daughter's birthday on Wednesday 27 July. We've been to Mondo many times before and apart from a few minor issues the food and service has always been excellent. Unfortunately on this occasion the meal was a disaster. I had double fish fillet and chips. The double fillet is simply a very thin extremely small fish sliced in half longways and covered in batter which was soggy and greasy. The chips were stodgy and looked like they'd been reheated from earlier. They tasted like they'd been lying from the lunch time service. Very greasy and not the usual crispy dry and fresh we normally get. One of my daughters ordered the chicken gougons and chips and again the chips were sub standard. The portion sizes were disappointing. About ten chips served in a small silver ornamental bucket with a sliver of pea puree and a small dollop of tartare sauce with two pickled onions on the side. My other daughter had the blade of beef which was served lukewarm and had to be sent back for reheating. Again the beef was very dry, like it had been prepared a lot earlier and the gravy or as it's called in Mondo the jus, was coagulated and too thick. The accompanying veg was scant. My daughter who dines at Mondo regularly said that there is usually a side of freshly made veg along with the dish, so she asked the server about it but was quite abruptly told that all the veg was already on the plate. It's disappointing to go to a venue where you think you can rely on good food from past experience but it turns out so disappointing. Even more so when we went at a peak time when you would expect the food to be cooked fresh and that the restaurant would be trying it's best to impress after all the difficulties the hospitality industry has faced in the last couple of years. You would like to think that local restaurants would be pulling out all the stops to retain customers rather than seeing them travelling further afield. Unfortunately on this visit Mondo didn't inspire me to go...
Read moreOn August 2nd, I visited Mondo Restaurant and ordered a non-alcoholic mocktail. Despite clearly requesting a non-alcoholic option, I was served a drink containing alcohol — a serious and unacceptable mistake.
This was not just a minor oversight. For someone who is sober, whether for health, personal, or recovery reasons, being unknowingly served alcohol is deeply distressing and harmful. It demonstrated a significant lack of care and attention from the staff involved.
After raising a formal complaint, I received a response acknowledging the mistake and offering an apology and refund. While the response outlined some internal steps being taken, I found it inadequate given the seriousness of what happened. The incident has had a lasting impact on my trust in this establishment.
If you have specific dietary, health, or sobriety-related requirements, I would advise caution when ordering here. I hope the business will treat such issues with the seriousness they deserve...
