I don’t usually post food reviews, as taste can be very subjective, but given the growing hype around The Wee Gurkha, I felt it was worth sharing my experience, especially for those considering it as a takeaway option.
I ordered a takeaway on 03/05/2025, consisting of two starters, two mains, two rices, and a naan bread, which came to £50. While that might seem like a reasonable amount of food for the price, I was genuinely surprised by how little we received in return.
The starters, chicken wings and chicken tikka, were £5.95 and £6.45 respectively. Both portions included just four small pieces, which barely amounted to a proper serving. For a family of four, there was certainly not enough to go around, especially if anyone wanted seconds. Unfortunately, the portion sizes and pricing simply didn’t align.
We also ordered the Southern Indian Chilli Chicken and Lamb Bhuna. While both dishes were edible and had some flavour, they lacked any distinctiveness. Had I not known what I was eating, I could have easily mistaken them for any run-of-the-mill curry. Again, the portion sizes were underwhelming, not ideal for sharing, and definitely not value for money.
The most disappointing element, however, was the garlic naan. It was flat, bland, and lacked any real flavour or texture. In all honesty, it felt like something that could have been bought from a supermarket shelf, small and barely covering the size of a dinner plate.
I had genuinely high hopes and was looking for an alternative to my usual favourite, Bombay Cottage in Hamilton. Sadly, The Wee Gurkha didn’t come close, and I won’t be returning. Next time, I’ll stick with what I know delivers quality and satisfaction.
I rated the atmosphere 1 star but I didn't eat in. I am sure its a lovely place inside with...
Read moreWe decided to go for a meal here for what was our third visit on 07/06/25. We’ve always really enjoyed the food, having previously also had takeaways too. Unfortunately, this visit was terrible! We decided to go after having been at the Stonehouse Gala so we were hungry and really looking forward to it. We decided we were only going to have a main, side, extra and a drink. As always, we both had a Sherpa Curry which is always terrific accompanied by a Peshwari Naan, rices of our choice and our drinks. We were enjoying a really good night when as I bit down there was a really loud audible crunch from my mouth! I’d bit down on something REALLY hard! Obviously shocked, I opened my mouth to fish out a piece of crockery! A piece of a plate/bowl (I think). Horrified, I called over the waiter who didn’t really know what to do or say. He then ran his finger around all of our plates but none were broken or chipped. The staff didn’t seem to mention the situation again until it was time for paying our bill. It took me mentioning the piece of crockery again before someone actually came up to discuss it. They were understandably very apologetic but I had cut the inside of my mouth! Again, they didn’t know what to say so he offered us…. one single measure of rum, no mixer (even though we were a couple). I have to say this really shocked me. I don’t like complaining as it’s embarrassing but I felt quite valid in my complaint. Ideally, we both should have received our main meal and drink for FREE! It’s the decent thing to do…. I’m now very wary of eating from The Wee Ghurka again…not sure...
Read moreVisited for dinner and had a lovely meal. The food was great, full of flavour, well presented and thoroughly enjoyable. There is a range of choices to suit all tastes and the Nepalese lamb dish my partner chose was amazing. The mixed grill I ordered came in the usual sizzling skillet and all the meat was cooked to perfection. If I had any slight issue it was that there was not a lot of curry sauce to have with the rice let alone the meat. This however could just be a personal preference thing and certainly will be going back.
As it is new premises the decor is fresh, clean and well presented. Tables have enough space to move around and the high ceilings giving an airy atmosphere. They operate a kind of one way system with an entry and exit door into and out of the restaurant and to the toilets which keeps any traffic moving. We walked but there is a car park at the back with a decent amount of spaces but does fill up quickly during busy periods. There are a number of bus routes within a couple of minutes walk though for access from many surroundings areas including Glasgow.
The staff were friendly and welcoming. Attentive without being overbearing and always nearby should you need anything.
Would definitely recommend and 100% and establishment Blantyre...
