The Liver Hotel South Road has had a makeover and what a shambles the place is! Instead of embracing its history as reportabley being the oldest pub in the area it has stripped away its originality and replaced it with tacky wall lights and poorly fitted ceiling pendants amongst just a few of the nasty refurb up grades or in this case, down grades. Called in for a night cap, a bit of live music and a game of pool. But what a disappointment!!! First we ordered a pint of larger and a gin and lemonade only no lemonade, had to go to petrol station to get a bottle of lemonade to put in my gin and they still had the audacity to charge almost £9 for a pint and a gin with a scrap of lemon thrown in. Which you dont mind paying but come on if you are going to sell cocktails at least get it right. To be fare the Liver is not the only pub guilty of selling poorly made cocktails down South Road. Then, no live music because the amp was broken and the pool table had been taken out and replaced with a rediculously large square table, what's that all about? So we asked for some darts, but they had apparently been stolen, so to the duke box only to find that not only where there tracks missing off albums it didn't play the right tracks selected. With cardboard boxes lined up at the end of the bar, light bulbs out and exposed wires hanging down, the bar was a mess. This pub should have been protected against such an unsympathetic makeover that obviously had no respect in maintaining this beautiful buildings nostalgia. The toilets have also had a makeover, nice and clean 2 cubicles but again, just like the ridiculous oversized table in the bar, 1 over sized wash hand basin has been fitted instead of 2 smaller more serviceable ones, so you may not have too queue for the loo but you will too wash your...

Staff are lovely, beer is to a good standard but.....
The food I experienced on my last visit was well below par. The portions were miserly for the money. The meats on the mixed grill were barely edible and definitely overcooked. I could not cut the chicken but if I poked it with my fork it shattered.
Reminded me of the turkey from national lampoons Christmas vacation.
Try harder on your food, it's very simple. Not worth the money and very disappointed as I quite often...
Read moreAfter experiencing shocking service in the summer I decided to give this pub another chance as it was my local and favourite Waterloo pub for over 20 years. I wish I hadn't!!! I ordered a pint of Heineken and it was immediately obvious the glass was not clean and gave the pint a funny taste. I took my beer back and explained what was wrong but was not believed. I said please taste yourself but instead gave me a disparaging comment and poured the pint into anew glass. When I asked for a fresh pint I was told there was nothing wrong with my drink and the barman walked away. Needless to say I did not drink the beer and will not return under...
