I've visited this café a few times and have had some lovely meals in the past, but my most recent experience was a little disappointing. It felt like both the food quality and service had slipped slightly.
We ordered a sausage sandwich from the children's menu, which is quite limited (just a choice of bacon or sausage sandwich, cheese toastie, or a waffle). It was £8 and came with a small juice, but the sandwich itself only had one sausage, sliced in half, inside thick bread. A second sausage would have made all the difference. It looked unappetising and unbalanced, and my little one ended up leaving most of the bread as it was too thick. It would be great to see some healthier or more appealing kid-friendly options—something like fruit salad or banana pancakes would be a lovely addition.
My boyfriend ordered the eggs Benedict but found it too dry, mostly due to the large amount of bread. He’d originally wanted the Turkish eggs, but they had unfortunately run out. I had the goat’s cheese salad, which was a letdown—the goat’s cheese was barely there, and the overpowering pickled onions threw off the balance of the dish. The vinegar also made the prosciutto soggy and fleshy which was very unpleasant to eat.
After we finished our meal, our dirty plates stayed on the table for over 40 minutes, and we ended up leaving without ordering the cakes or drinks we’d been looking forward to because we ran out of time waiting.
I’m sharing this as constructive feedback because I genuinely like this café and hope to see it improve again. I know it can be great, and I’d love to see more attention to table service and a few more thoughtful menu options—especially for kids and salads. Looking forward to visiting again soon, hopefully with a better...
Read moreI had been hearing good things about Joni, so on a miserable rainy day I ventured out to see what all the fuss was about.
The venue is modern with lots of natural light. My first impression was that the music was far too loud but ignoring that it was a good atmosphere.
We were greeted very quickly and were seated at our booked table immediately. We had only booked 30mins before which was handy. There were tables available throughout but on busier days I'd recommend booking.
The cafe had automatic doors on the entrance but they were kept open meaning there was quite a cold breeze in the cafe. We spied the owner getting out portable radiators which I feel was a bit optimistic given the massive hole for the heat to escape.
Drinks were ordered very quickly. Coffee was reasonable but if you like a strong coffee I'd recommend another shot as it is not strong as standard. Smoothies were very nice too and very cold.
Food came in a reasonable amount of time. The cafe was open to fussy eaters making alterations. I had the special Croque Monsieur (Prosciutto, Caramelised Onion and stilton) minus the stilton which was delicious. It came with a side salad which paired perfectly with the sandwich which lifted the whole meal.
Desserts were also very good. I recommend a Bakewell slice.
Overall a really pleasant experience but could do with a few comfort tweaks such as the music and door to make it perfect. Would be five...
Read moreEvery now and then you come across an eating place that hits all of the right notes. Firstly Joni is situated in the beautiful Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet which is always worth a visit. The cafe is a wonderfully comfortable space with room to sit inside and outside. The inside decor and style has been thoughtfully designed and the food and drinks are first class, with a thoughtful and enticing menu. We just stopped in for coffee and cakes which were to perfection but we will definitely be returning for lunch. Finally the staff were friendly and helpful. This place is perfect for meeting friends and family but they also have additional space perfect for holding small meetings with the added advantage of the excellent catering. The owners and staff are doing...
