We had an absolutely fantastic experience at Slice in Swansea last night! The restaurant itself is tiny and charming — the building is shaped like a slice of cake, which must be where they got their name. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by the chefs downstairs in the kitchen, who kindly took my jacket before we headed upstairs to the intimate dining area. The seating is small and cosy, with just one server managing the entire room, but she was absolutely brilliant — incredibly friendly, attentive, and professional, just as you’d expect in fine dining.
We opted for the six-course tasting menu, which began with a beautiful assortment of warm breads paired with two deliciously flavoured butters, followed by a mouthwatering amuse bouche. For starters, my partner and I chose a different dish each — scallop and lamb neck — and shared them. Both were bursting with flavour and beautifully presented, with perfect pairings on the plate.
The mains were equally outstanding: cod and langoustine, pork presented four ways, and then a steak fillet with an oxtail and onion tart. Every dish was cooked to perfection and packed with flavour.
Dessert was a true highlight — a very stylish and delicious trifle followed by an unforgettable banana soufflé with popcorn ice cream. The soufflé was so light and packed with banana flavour, while the popcorn ice cream took me straight back to childhood with its nostalgic, rich taste.
Slice may look like a no-frills, family-run restaurant, but it absolutely surprises you with the decadence and finesse of its plates. It’s already on the Michelin Guide, and I truly believe it could earn a star — although I hope they never lose the cosy charm that makes them so special.
A small note to anyone dining at Slice: their card machine currently doesn’t allow you to add a tip, so do bring cash if you’d like to tip (and trust me, you will!).
When leaving, the chefs again came out to thank us and say goodbye — a lovely, personal touch to end a perfect evening. We can’t wait to return often, especially with their exciting new menu changes every...
Read moreWe had been wanting to try Slice for a number of years but given the limited number of tables and popularity it had proved difficult in the past. However, the wait was worth it.
There are not many restaurants in the same class as Slice in Swansea. Food-wise, I would personally put Slice in the same class as the Beach House which has one Michelin star. Of course the Beach House has the benefit of location which adds to the experience but then Oxwich is difficult to get to unless you are staying overnight or driving. Slice is very easily accessible given it is located in the centre of Sketty.
Slice has a very intimate feel. On entering the main entrance we were welcomed personally by the chef. I think there are only 2 chef's on during dinner service and a single waitress/maitre d'. The maitre d' is extremely hard working and friendly and even though they are only a limited number of covers per evening she was not still for a second.
Our table had the tasting menu and it was very well considered and put together and the food was great. If I were to be very picky I would say that more time could have been taken to explain each course (e.g. where some of the ingredients came from) and it would have been helpful to leave a copy of the menu on the table to diners could be reminded what they were eating. But as I said, that would be nit picking.
The maitre d' mentioned that the tasting menu changed every 7 weeks so it will be exciting to come back and sample something new.
If you want "fine dining" style food, easily accessible by public transport then I don't think there is anywhere better in Swansea than Slice. It is not cheap and can't be to maintain the standard and quality of ingredients but I would highly recommend visiting to experience...
Read moreThis may just be the best dining experience I have had in a long time, offering both great food to the service.
This small restaurant is just a hidden gem, tucked away in the back street of Sketty.
As soon as we entered the building, we were greeted by the chefs. Which was such a pleasure, which made us feel very welcome and set the evening up nicely.
Service was impeccable, with 1 really friendly hostess who knew everything about the dishes and really looked after us throughout the night, and as the restaurant only has 5 to 6 tables, the need for another waitress is redundant and would take away from the experience the 1 hostess brings.
It took us about 2.5 hours for the 6 course taster menu and honestly it was nice not to feel rushed for once in a restaurant, as I feel lately most restaurants just want you out as soon as you sit down ... I have seen some reviews saying 2.5 hours is a long time, however I think it is the perfect amount of time for an evening meal, no matter how many courses ... and when the food being served is so technical and not packeted portions like other popular and favoured restaurants around, waiting a little longer is really not something you should be moaning about.
On a more merry note, the food was well presented and simply tasted out of this world with so many different textures and flavours. You could see how much passion and effort has been put into each dish and can easily see why this restaurant has achieved a Michelin Star!
Lastly, we have to mention the price and ask the question: Is it worth it? ... Oh yes, most definitely, and I know for a fact I will be returning. Thank you Slice for such a...
