We stopped by The Greyhound Inn in Whitchurch-on-Thames for a short break during our countryside walk, hoping to have a nice cup of tea. To our surprise, tea wasn't on offer, which is unusual for a traditional British pub. Nevertheless, we decided to stay and ordered a local shandy, sparkling water, and a portion of chips to share.
The setting more than made up for the limited drinks menu. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with a spacious interior that still feels cozy thanks to the tasteful decor and soft lighting. It’s the kind of place where you immediately feel comfortable and relaxed, whether you’re a local or just passing through like us.
What really stood out was the garden area. There were plenty of tables available, and even on a pleasant day, it wasn’t overcrowded. It’s clearly a popular resting point for walkers and cyclists, and the garden is ideal for enjoying a drink or bite to eat in the fresh air.
The shandy was refreshing and clearly made from local ingredients, which added a nice touch of authenticity. The chips were hot, crispy, and satisfying — just what we needed after a few miles of walking. The service was quick and friendly, and although we didn’t try the full menu, the dishes we saw being served around us looked hearty and appealing.
All in all, The Greyhound Inn is a charming stop for a casual drink or meal, especially if you're out exploring the surrounding area. While tea lovers might be slightly disappointed, the pub’s atmosphere and comfort more than make up for it. We’ll certainly consider coming back — perhaps next time for a full...
Read moreA lovely little village pub. Has just had a bit of a make over both inside and the garden and is a lot better for it! And what a fantastic change to see a pub NOT and i repeat NOT doing food and instead concentrating on beer/drinks! It will be doing a small selection of food i. e pork pies, sausage rolls etc but going back to being a proper pub being its priority! The only issues i have with it now are 1, dim the lights more to make it really cosy and maybe think about putting on each table a real candle to make it really welcoming, that would be a great finishing touch and 2, and the biggest issue i (& other customers have said) is the music!!! It's not the actual music (which is fantastic by the way!) but the volume of it, its waaay too loud! Its a thing so many pubs/bars make the mistake of doing. Just keep it in the background, people make the atmosphere! Sort these small issues out and it will be a 5 out...
Read moreWe had Sunday lunch here and were both completely bowled over at the excellence of service and the superb quality of Chef Andy's delicious presentation and scrumptiously perfect Roast Pork. The vegetables are to die for! So beautifully cooked, with a slight crunch, fresh, vibrant and infinitely superior to any restaurant in this area. The pork (with fantastic crispy crackling) was succulent and mouthwateringly 'more-ish'; combined with a monster Andy's-own Yorkshire pudding and home made gravy, and with the best roast potatoes I have ever had, this was a Sunday lunch to delight in. The apple pie and custard was simply wonderful. All in all it was just a thoroughly delicious experience. The pub is charming and has a pretty outside garden. We will definitely be...
