I recently had the pleasure of dining at Kali Mirchi in Southampton, and I was thoroughly impressed by the quality of the food, the cleanliness of the restaurant, and the warm hospitality of the staff. I have been to many Indian restaurants, and this was certainly one of the worst, if not the worst one. The service wasn't great- we had to wait a long time until we made eye contact with one of the waiters for them to come over to us.

Starters: We ordered the Tandoori King Prawns and Lamb Chops. We were served a mere 3 King Prawns that were burnt and the sauce was not flavoursome, and it was very expensive! (Around £8 or £9). Similarly the lamb chops were very dry, the meat did not taste of good quality, and the sauce was not nice at all.

Mains: We ordered a Dhal Makhani, Madras Chicken and Prawn Jalfreezi. The madras chicken was by far the worst madras chicken I've ever had at any restaurant- we sent it back because it had literally no flavour. I regularly order spicy curries at different restaurants and am from South Asia, so I have had a lot of curries, and this had literally zero flavour, and I have no idea how. The prawn jalfreezi and dual makhani were below average also, though not as bad as the Chicken Madras. We got the madras replaced due to its lack of flavour, but it just returned hotter, not with any added flavour. The portion size for the mains was average- nothing wrong on that front- in fact, I'd say the garlic naan portion size was probably better than average.

First time here and I'm really impressed. We collected a takeaway this time but will most definitely be visiting the restaurant in the near future. Portions was generous and fair value. The meat in every dish perfectly cooked. All dishes full of flavour, fresh and tasted beautiful. The naan breads was amazing, couldn't have been better. Best Indian I've had in a long while. Edit to add - a few years on and I’ve had many evenings here it really is the best around, I’ve tried all the others locally and they are not a patch on Kali we’re always left dissatisfied if we get food anywhere else. We have worked our way through the menu and enjoyed every dish that was to our taste. Staff are friendly and happy to talk you through any dishes or alter. Covid protocols made us feel safe.
