Just to start with, the food at Amrit wasn’t bad, the leg of lamb was very good and pretty unique thus I’m trying to give a fair review based on our experience - We visited Amrit with a party of 15 and spent close to £500. Now for the negative points, we started with a round of drinks – 5 of the soft drinks/mixers tasted funny and upon checking, the expiry date was 2024, whilst they replaced these pretty quickly – this wasn’t acceptable. I would also add that the replacement drinks were also due to expire the following week!! Next was the round of various starters – we waited approx. 30 mins between the first set of starters (masala chips) and the all the rest. As an apology the kitchen sent extra starters – apparently the kitchen wasn’t told we wanted these as starters and not main meals. The starters were ok bar the chicken pieces which were very dry. The main meal food was good, little to complain about here. They did send out extra vegetarian dishes which we were not to our taste. Then came the bill, a few of the party spoke to the manager on the issues and when we received the bill he explained that they couldn’t reduce the bill as they sent out extra food (which we didn’t ask for). On top of that they charged us a 10% service charge. I left it with the manager to see what he could do and did explain that I would be giving a review regardless. He ended up taking of approx. £15 of the service charge, now I didn’t argue but I didn’t think it was acceptable. Taking £15 off a service charge when we spend close to £500, in my opinion wasn’t acceptable.
I’m not sure we would return to Amrit, whilst the food was good, there are lots of very good Indian restaurants in St Albans, and getting charged for a lack of service was...
Read moreDecided to try this restaurant for the first time, admittedly we attended without a reservation, however this does little to excuse the icy unwelcoming reception for the unhelpful staff. On being seated, we were asked if we wanted to order drinks, but opted to take a few minutes to check the menu to see what was on offer. We were offered and opted for popadoms, brought out with an array of bland chutneys, for which we later found out we were charged almost £6. On ordering, we were informed rudely that it was the policy of the restaurant for everyone to order a main. We explained that, as we had not dined here before, we wanted to order starters to begin, and order mains to follow once we knew how hungry we were. At this point, not to our knowledge, our order was cancelled until we had chosen and pre-ordered main dishes. When we realised this 10 minutes later, we were informed that Saturday nights are very busy, and so we had to order mains or our order wouldn't be processed. By this stage, the experience had been so poor that we paid our bill and left. Of course we were intending to order mains, we were out for dinner on a Saturday night after all, however the attitude of the staff made for an unpleasant atmosphere and we didn't want to continue. Consider this a warning; if you value friendly service and an amicable dining experience, avoid Amrit St Albans; or risk paying almost £20 for some poppadoms, a few chutneys, a diet coke and 2 beers whilst staff are abrasive and look down their nose at you. 1 star, reviewing the service, couldn't speak for the food because the experience was so unpalatable that we didn't even make...
Read moreCame here with 5 friends. We pre-booked for a Friday night for which they asked £30 to secure. Please note this wasn't a card-prepayment which more professional restaurants tend to do, they actually take £30 off your card over the phone, so beware of this when making a booking. Anyways, we sat down and ordered, everything was generally fine, service was efficient providing us with plenty of tap water when needed. However, we did feel a little rushed at times. The food unfortunately was sub-par. I ordered a mixed-grill which was dissatisfying in the fact that my friend who ordered a chicken shashlick had many more vegetables on his sizzler than I did, I order the mixed grill due to having the veggies! There was only one prawn and very few pieces of meat. Taste wise it was alright. Speaking to my friend about their curries afterwards and they found them to be somewhat lacking too. It is worth noting that they charge £2 for each chutney tray and £0.80p per poppadom, the chutney trays of which they just gave us two when we probably would've been fine with one. Generally, it was expensive for what we got.
Overall there is nothing special about this place and there are MUCH better places for curry in St Albans in my honest opinion. I won't be...
