The Wine Club — Restaurant in St Helens

Unfortunately we had a terrible experience. Been before and the welcome and food were great. This time brought my child for lunch and were told we couldn't be seated in the restaurant as 'we don't allow children'. Gentleman literally said they were trying to create 'a vibe'. Nothing on the website as of early January 2025 stating children were not welcome for a lunch time sitting. Really poor and then a lady said it was because of the licence only being for 14yrs+ which would have been fine if 1. It was listed on the website so people don't travel there to be turned away and 2. We hadn't just been told it was to create a 'vibe'. So someone isn't quite being honest. Then the lady was really quite rude about it all to boot. She did then say we could sit outside and be served - it was -1 in the snow in early January so that wouldn't work but also either you can serve children on your licence or you can't. Where we sat wouldn't make a difference to that. Absolutely would not return to an establishment who've made a conscious decision to exclude a portion of society to create a vibe and that felt it could be so rude to potential...

I don't live here, I was visiting from Scotland (ahm no Scottish!) so my visits are infrequent at present, neither do I know any of the staff or owners. This place has a lovely Mediterranean type menu. It has options of 'Meze' or 'Tapas' type dishes as well as some main meals which are tempting. The food is lovely, huge portions, charming, friendly staff who are just, well, nice, now that's a rarity! The venue needs to expand as this level of superb service will make it popular. Most staff walked around masked up, one didn't which is the reason I didn't give five stars. TBH, given that masks are not the best method of preventing the transmission of Covid, I'm not overly fussed! The litmus test is will I go again? Absolutely lovely place, food was amazing and the staff are so friendly. We ordered the pizzas and they were delicious, they are freshly made to order. They came at staggered times but maybe a minute or two later and as they were so good we did not mind the slight weight. They have a specials board but we ordered off the main menu. We made a reservation and I'm so glad we did as the place was packed, highly recommend you do the same to avoid disappointment. If you're in the area give this place a try, you will not be...
