Live locally and have seen this place go from disaster to disaster with Pizza Express and Creams. Felt sceptical about what was coming next. The signage on the outside quoting ‘Europe and Steak Kitchen’ doesn’t really make sense, ‘Breakfast and Lunch and Dinner, should really have a comma and spelling on the Breakfast menu quoting ‘mapple syrup’ made me question who quality checking this place. The guys behind this new offering of Angelique have unquestionably been working tirelessly putting this place together over the last few months. I visited with a friend for Brunch at around noon on its first day of opening. I didn’t particularly have high hopes but thought I would give it a try as I’m all for supporting local independent companies. We were welcomed immediately on arrival by staff wearing appropriate PPE and was shown to a table in the spacious and well set out restaurant area. You can reassuringly see through to the kitchen and the lighting and decor was relaxing and pleasant. It definitely had a mediterranean feel about it. Service was attentive and a manager even made a point of coming over to us for a service check to ensure we were enjoying our visit. The coffee was good and the orange juice was freshly squeezed. Breakfast items were Eggs Benedict For my guest and smashed avocado and poached eggs on sourdough for me. Both items were fresh, piping hot and delicious. This was a very positive first visit and exceeded on all levels. £30 for 4 drinks and breakfast wasn’t bad. Over the years and after eating everywhere else in Old Town I definitely think this represents the best breakfast. Will definitely return and will try dining at another time of day and hope the experience can be repeated. If consistency in service and food in can be achieved at this at this venue then I’m sure it will succeed. I hope it does and I...
Read moreA few weeks' ago a taxi driver said this was a good place for steaks. Unfortunately, it wasn't my experience.
However, starter....
Pan fried prawns in a chilli, garlic and tomato sauce (£9.95). The prawns were a reasonable size and came three pieces of toasted brown bread. I didn't get the hit of the chillies, which made the sauce rather bland.
The main:
Ribeye with a beef tomato and seasoned chips (£29.95). The steak was supposed to be aged for 30 days. I always err on the side of caution these days and go for it to be medium. The steak was cooked as ordered, but it was tough to chew. I persevered, but left a bit of it in the end, just giving up. I told the waiter, and also pointed out that the tomato was a beef tomato.
I asked the waiter if I could see the raw ingredients, which obliged with a ribeye and a fillet. My observation was that the meat was too pink and bloody for them to be 30 days.
The waiter offered to remove the service charge, yet the service was the best bit. I said that was explaining my experience for money off or a freebie.
When I booked online I requested a time of 19:30, and got a call from the restaurant asking if I could do 19:00. When I arrived, the restaurant was empty. During my meal there were other guests ("walk-ins"), so I am not sure if there going to be other bookings. It certainly wasn't full by the time I arrived.
The waiter was pleasant and others were attentive.
Drinks:
Cobra - Pt - £5.50 250ml - Organic Malbec - £11.00
Service Charge: £5.64
Total: £62.04
They couldn't give me a VAT bill, as they were just registering as the business had changed hands!
I could call back in a weeks' time to see if had been sorted out.
I found some of the wines on the menu quite...
Read moreWe come to Angelique not for the first time / first as a family of 6 . Firstly wasn’t happy how they served us the drinks . They have bring new glasses for coke exactly the same one as there were already on table and haven’t picked the spare one . So it wasn’t a lot space on the table then . Secondly our daughter food was served well earlier than our . Then when we finally get our food one order was different then we asked . We have asked for two filet steaks (cooked medium) and one ribeye ( medium rare ) +other two dishes . we have recived one filet steak and two ribeye. We said that that we asked for two filet not two ribeyes and after discussing it was changed for filet . (But she was looking for our fault in there as the waitress apparently put down two ribeyes (not sure way ) Again this filet was cooked medium rare not medium . I just end up not complaining about that, my daughter was so upset didn’t finish it (my husbad did) . The chicken (Spanish) was dry too . When the waitress come and ask if food was good I told them about another mistake and I told her that some of food was not good in our opinion . She said she will ask manager to come over . Manager didn’t come she gave us discount of 14.74 but charge us for service charge of 13.27 which in my opinion should be taken off too . To end this comment is not about discount but is about right order and lovely food like we previously had . We are really disappointed this time and I really don’t know if we ever go there again . You expecting good service when you are spending...
