Decided to go here for dinner with my partner. We had never been here before and both love a curry. We ordered a drink each and poppadoms. The mint yogurt was gross but the Mango chutney was nice. I was concerned straight away as I ordered a malibu and coke with no ice. I was first served a malibu with lemonade and ice to which I asked for the drink I ordered again. I was then given what I believed was the correct drink but again with ice. As the waiter handed me my drink he realised his error and took the drink away. I was then given what I thought was the correct drink. Took a mouthful and it was archers peach schnapps with coke in a hot glass. I couldn't be bothered to ask for it to be corrected so just went with it. We ordered our food, I asked some questions that were not answered about the food. The waiters didn't seem to really pay attention to my questions. Borderline rude. Again I let it go. Half of the food arrived promptly, in cold ceramic bowls plonked on the table. No hot metal bowls on tea light table top heaters as I'm used to?? Plates to eat off were given to us which were also cold. The rest of the food came out and it all looked lovely. Well looks can be deceiving. And they were. The food was extremely disappointing. My partner had a keema naan that was oily and undefiled, coconut rice and a Chicken passanda with no flavour. I had a lamb biryiani with no flavour and a pint of oil leaving a gross lining in my mouth. The sag aloo had a reasonable flavour but the potatos were undercooked and hard in the middle. The garlic mushrooms were extremely spicy and tomatoey with the tiniest hint of garlic. And the vegetable curry had no flavour what so ever. Apart from the oily lining in my mouth, the food wasn't horrible/awful. But it certainly wasn't nice. The total bill was £44 and I think I could have bought a supermarket cook at home Indian meal for a third of that price and enjoyed it an awful lot more. I felt extremely disappointed with the food. The place is like it wants to be modern and could be a nice environment but the food is a big let down. The thing I enjoyed the most was the chocolate after dinner mint and they gave me extra which was kind but didn't really soften the blow at paying that much money for less than average food and the wrong drink. As I side note the restaurant was empty apart from one extremely loud couple which we were sat right next too.
I feel really disappointed with my experience and I wouldn't recommend it or ever go back. To put it all into perspective, if it was the only curry house for 50 miles I'd either travel 50 miles or not eat curry.
I've given 2 stars cause the service was very quick which I feel is...
Read moreI have been to this restaurant on a number of occasions without booking with my family and have never had a bad experience until today’s visit. When we arrived we were told they were fully booked but yet offered us a table for three. Our orders were taken, which arrived promptly. Whilst eating, various members of staff came to our table and watched us for a few moments, checking how much food we had left. We were clearly treated differently to the neighbouring table, who received the smiles and table manner that all customers should be receiving as a minimum standard. Once we finished our plates were cleared instantly! Promptly followed by chocolates and the bill (£64), without us requesting it. I asked to speak to the manager and was told he was busy and they would take a message, I informed them I was happy to wait. The manager came I explained that the service has been shocking and not what we usually expect, he dismissed my complaints and proceeded about his job. A member of staff then came the table to take away our check saying that the manager has said we should pay at the bar. This was a step to far and we went the bar where I asked for a discount for the lack of service and feeling of being rushed, explaining again that if the restaurant was fully booked they should not be taking walk-ins. The manager refused my request and told us to not pay and leave the restaurant, which we did. He then followed us out to shout at me causing a scene both inside and outside of his own restaurant. I was expressing my rights to go to a restaurant and pay to eat a meal in peace without feeling like an inconvenience to be pushed out. We were at the restaurant for less than an hour, being rushed and being treated as we are an inconvenience falls well below standards. I would have understood if we were pre-warned of having to eat and leave quickly, and given the choice to find an alternative restaurant. I for one will never return to this restaurant again, I work hard for my money and I am not willing to pay for such treatment or to be treated as if I am in the wrong for standing up for...
Read moreSpice Rouge used to be the go to Indian in Stevenage Old Town, now it's like any other run of the mill restaurant, outdated, tired and serving 'very' average expensive food.
Within 2 mins of being seated we were asked if we wanted Poppadoms, this was fine but then a minute later we were asked if we were ready to order. We hadn't even opened the menus!
Sorry, but £10.50 for a Chicken Korma/Tikka Masala with around 'half' of a decent sized Chicken breast doesn't offer good value for money. Dishes were plonked on the table served in a standard white bowl (something I'd eat my Cornflakes out of!).
What happened to the unique Indian dining experience, stainless steel serving dishes and the heat plates that used to go down the centre of the table?
The food arrived in a decent time, it was served hot but was quite bland. Also, no hot towels, no offer to see whether we wanted more drinks, coffee, desserts etc.
Overall experience was very disappointing.
Items Ordered were 6 x Poppadum's, 1 x Chicken Korma, 1 x Chicken Tikka Masala, 1 Lamb Madras, 2 x Pilau Rice, 1 x Sag Aloo, 1 x Garlic Naan & 1 x Onion Bhaji (which are nowhere near as big as they used to be), 1 x Diet Coke, 1 x Lemonade and 1 x Pint of...
