I was here earlier in the year and had the cheek to be finishing a sandwich as I arrived. I was warned by some locals at the door that the landlord would go nuts, I thought he was joking. The aforementioned chap saw me from behind the bar, pointed at me and started yelling, "GET OUT! HEALTH AND SAFETY!".
Anyway I walked back three paces and finished my sandwich before going in. Once inside the beer was not bad and we had a Manchester Egg which was nice. We were a bit ruffled by the "interesting" landlord however, him explaining that if I got food poisoning from my own sandwich "he would be liable".
I put this down to a one-off and that maybe he'd gotten out of the wrong side of bed that morning.
I included the pub in our travels when we went this weekend, unfortunately the Landlord has become even more eccentric. The website says "no ale trail people after 7pm except by prior appointment". Seems fair enough. We arrived there earlier (17:55 so we could be out by 7PM), yet the landlord went as far as to run out the front of the pub and tell everyone they were not welcome and to go away. WTF?
Anyway, after scaring us away, we went down the road to the Commercial where there was a far more welcoming landlord there who was inviting people in, and we had a great time.
I can understand a landlord's tricky situation of wanting to keep the atmosphere of his pub how he sees fit, and it's well within his rights to do that, but in this case the guy comes across as a bit of a power-tripping nutjob, it's simply not on to just flip a coin and decide you don't want people in or not.
I can understand turning away a group of yobs or whatever but we are all in our thirties (or older), who enjoy a pint of real ale with friends. Planning sampling local ales around a train line isn't trivial, you have to know where you are going at what time, so every pub has to be considered and we chose this one based on past experience and reviews.
Of the 9 pubs we visited that day (and this one was 7th), this was the only one to have any kind of negative experience. Many of the people in our group had never visited Mossley before and were incredulous at the treatment this guy hands out. They now know to skip over the Britannia and head to the Commercial!
I'm sure I am just a drop in the ocean but I won't be visiting again; neither will anyone I know and I will be actively making sure nobody I know visits this...
Read moreThese pubs just tend to attract blokes who are "unsafe", "obnoxious", and "harassing". Good to know it's temporarily closed. One day when I was in this pub, I had repulsive innuendos thrown at me by someone who was clearly a predator. It made me think I could actually get attacked (as you never know...alcohol is dangerous). Pubs are getting worse. The bully/harasser picks their moment to pressure females and it's when the management disappear. Places like this aren't worth the stress if you are a lady. I avoid pubs at all costs now. The roaches lock down the street felt just as frightening when I went in there as a one off... discreet innuendos thrown at me there too. It just makes some females very fearful and it damages people's...
Read moreOur new favourite pub. We're not big drinkers and don't normally go to pubs on a regular basis but would go on occasion on baby free nights. We saw an ad for this place by chance on facebook for the quiz on sundays hosted by Elliott. It's a great electronic quiz and you get supper from Sunday's leftovers included in the price of the quiz which is £1. It's on Sundays from 7.30pm and usually finished by 9.30. The past few weeks we've have the leftover Ham from the roast dinner on sandwiches and Chilli con Carne with Rice. Drinks are also reasonably priced and the main menu food is delicious too, but make aure to order before the kitchen closes at 6.45 if you need to eat before the...
