Although previously known as the Old Surrey Hound, the pub has been subject to a complete revamp. It looks smart and clean inside. It was a nice day so we sat in the garden, where there is loads of seating. We visited for Saturday lunch. The menu was what I would call typical pub grub (including pies, ham egg and chips, scampi, a selection of sandwches etc etc). We had a fish finger sandwich and a chicken and Bacon sandwich. The food was cooked to order, the bread fresh, the chips nice and the portion size plentiful. We made use of the "meal deal" which was £6.49 each including a drink (you can choose from a limited selection of alcoholic drinks, though we didn't). Good honest pub grub. The barman-come-waiter was brilliant - very friendly without being overbearing, and he checked all was ok with our food after a few minutes. I would strongly recommend for a spot of cheap lunch, especially if you are hungry. Incidentally - the toilet were quite possibly the cleanest I have ever seen in a pub !! The only downside was that the place felt a little empty - come on guys, lets use it...
Read moreUp until about a year or so ago we used to enjoy the food here, however, we visited today & unfortunately had the our second terrible meal there. The last one we thought was a one off as 3 out of 4 meals came out stone cold & half of it missing. Today’s meals were no better. The chicken BLT sandwich came out with no bacon or tomato & only small chicken pieces on one half of the sandwich. The 2 cod goujon sandwiches were even worse, with only 2 tiny fish goujon’s (way smaller than a normal fish finger) that barely filled one half of the sandwich? They were basically 80% bread & 20% filling. The kids tomatoe pasta was just a bowl of plain cooked pasta with a spoonful of passata sauce dolloped on top! I know people are making cut backs etc but that doesn’t mean we should cut back on quality. It looked like it had been made by a 10 year old? Thank goodness for the friendly barman who was actually...
Read more[Revision: since my last visit the beer choice has gone downhill. They now clearly have their beer supplied by Greene King and the range of beers has suffered accordingly]
The Surrey Hounds has actually improved a great deal of late. Maybe they've cottoned to the idea that people are actually interested in the real ale/craft beer revolution. The nicest area to sit is the area that backs onto Crescent Road. The front area (adjacent to Croydon Road can get very busy and the back is a bit open plan and gloomy.
The pub always had a reputation for being somewhat dated and even dirty with a sticky old carpet and low-life clientele. But this is largely no longer the case. It has a wide variety of customers and the choice of beers is unmatched anywhere in Caterham at this time. Long may that continue,
Very handy for Caterham station and now one of only two pubs left...
