We have been long time customers of the Old Elm inn; however, we moved to Bristol and therefore away from the area. We wanted to come back for the Christmas quiz and booked a table for 8, months in advance and called up on the day to make sure everything was OK. We were told everything was fine; however, we were now booked in on a 4 seater table, rather than 8 which would have been a disaster if my parents hadn't needed to cancel owing to having the flu.
We turned up and we were informed they were overbooked and that our table (a table for 4 not 8) was to be one of the bar tables for watching the sport, far away from the pub quiz section which would have been inaudible from our seats. We were quite rightly very upset as we had driven an hour to be there and this had interrupted our son's sleep routine (who woke up from the pram owing to the commotion and noise of the sports TV).
Matt, the quiz organiser, was dismissive and made no effort to accommodate us. It in fact seemed premeditated, we are long time attendees of the quiz and have never complained or made trouble and it appeared to be the case that the inn had downsized our table and tucked us out of the way so they could make room for two more teams. Matt showed us some fake texts that he had supposedly sent to a ten digit number similar to our own in an attempt to try and excuse their behaviour, however his phone service would have immediately told him that the messages could not be delivered. If they really wanted to contact us they would have reached out to us on Facebook as we have been in the quiz hundreds of times in the past, winning on several occasions with our photo and profiles on the inn's page, which the inn is more than aware of.
Completely unacceptable given the amount of time we spent driving there and back, the amount of money we spent on petrol and the disappointment of not being in the quiz. There is no loyalty to returning customers and this is not the first time we have found Matt rude and dismissive...
Read moreFirst visit here with family as we've been told the menu had a good selection of veggie meals and indeed it does. A great venue with friendly and chatty staff and a place where the owners have clearly made an effort to keep the customers entertained and spoiled for choice. Well presented and comfortable venue which has two distinct areas: the calm quiet area for the people looking for a relaxed meal or pint and a chat and the louder area for the groups and customers looking for a more lively atmosphere. The latter is where our group were positioned. The area had a smaller screen showing the football plus there was a second, larger screen further round the bar, better for the sports fans there to see the game. There seemed to be events or special activities planned every night of the week (picture included). There was a play area for kids and little table top toys for very little ones to keep them entertained for 5 minutes. There was a corner piled up with board games too but it was a pity the previous clientele had lost pieces or vandalized the contents with rude drawings âč. Great selection of ales on offer which was a real plus for me. In addition, CAMRA members get 10% off their beers. Menu was good with a nice choice of meals including kids choices. The food was lovely and good value so felt very satisfied. I think next time we may sit in the quieter area with the kids at that time of day (6pm Saturday), as some of the language of the lads present wasn't very nice unfortunately. But other than that we had a lovely meal and a couple of drinks. Quiz nights, live music nights, etc. The locals always have something to go to which is great. Will likely be visiting again when in...
Read moreIf youâre looking for a place where good food, great service, and a parking spot that doesnât involve a parallel parking nightmare come together, The Old Elm Inn in Churchdown is your new best friend.
Tucked away in a corner of Gloucester where the sheep outnumber the people (probably), this charming inn serves up meals that will have you questioning whether you accidentally wandered into a 5-star restaurant. The food is so good, even my picky Uncle Bob, who once sent back toast for being too 'bready,' left satisfied.
The service? Letâs just say itâs like being greeted by an old friend who somehow knows exactly how you like your tea and who doesnât judge you for ordering extra chips. Theyâre friendly, attentive, and manage to make you feel at home, without the awkward small talk about the weather.
As for the parking situation â thereâs free parking right across the street! And letâs be honest, in the UK, finding free parking feels a bit like finding a unicorn.
So, if youâre in the area and fancy a meal that will leave both your stomach and your sense of humor satisfied, swing by The Old Elm Inn. Just be warned, you might leave with a food baby and a weirdly strong desire to move...
