The White Horse — Restaurant in Wakefield

Used to really enjoy eating here, but the last few times have been a major disappointment. On Friday it was shockingly bad, ordered the Mega Mixed Grill with the Steak rare, that came medium-well. The rest of the meat was massively overcooked so it was actually dry. No moisture left inside any of it. I know I was eating outside but the 20 or so yards from kitchen to table certainly doesn't make your meat go luke warm. Meat of any kind continues to cook once it hits a certain temperature so for it only to be mildly warm means it had been sat around for quite a while for that to happen. When I mentioned how bad it was to a waitress (one who wasn't a part time student) so should certainly know how to handle the situation simply said, I like my meat like that. I wasn't aware food was cooked to the staff preferences & not the customers. Seem to me like "we've got your money, tough luck".

Finally we have been numerous times now since hospitality reopen & not once has any of the staff came to our table & asked us to check-in with the NHS Covid-19 app or taken our name & contact details for Test & Trace. Visited today with my mam and 10 year old daughter. We ordered food and the service was excellent. I got a baguette and my daughter got a beef burger. My daughter ate half her burger before she said she couldn't eat no more because it taste funny. Both me and my mother took a bite and spat it out. The burger smelt off and tasted foul. I took the burger to the bar and ask if the chef would like to taste. When the girl returned she said the chef said it was OK. I asked had the chef tasted the food but was told (not sure). The owner Tony, ive been told, came to the back of the bar and I heard him ask who'd complained. When I explained it was my family he turned his back and ignored me. I told him that I was concerned about the food served to my young daughter but his reply was my wife said it was OK. I was not after no refund as my daughter had eaten half the food BUT rude and dismissive attitude from the Owner stank worse than the burger. Our group of 6 visited following a trip to Nostel Priory NT, only 5 min drive away. Easy to park. We'd pre-booked on the advice of other reviews that there wasn't a huge amount of inside space, good advice for a bigger group. On arrival, we were expected and shown to our reserved table. The outside seating area looks nice for another sunny day. Service was good, friendly and efficient. There was a good food choice and we ordered a variety of meals off the menu and the specials board. All we're delivered together, hot and good portions. The chunky chips were great as I'm told was the mash with the lamb shank off the specials board. We opted not to have starters or desserts, due to having had lunchtime nibbles only a few hours earlier, but the choice looked good and we'll plan for this in future.
