Indian Ocean Restaurant (South Wales): A Pleasant Ambiance Let Down by Bland Flavors
My recent visit to Indian Ocean Restaurant in South Wales left me with mixed feelings. While the ambiance was inviting and the staff friendly, the food itself fell short of expectations, particularly for someone accustomed to Indian flavors.
Let's start with the positives. The restaurant had a pleasant atmosphere. The decor was tasteful, and the lighting created a relaxed and comfortable setting. The staff were attentive and friendly, making us feel welcome and explaining the menu options patiently.
However, the food itself was a bit of a letdown. We opted for the chicken tikka masala, naan bread, and chapathi. One thing that immediately struck us was the unusual pink color of the chicken tikka. We're used to seeing a richer, tandoori-red hue, so this raised a small eyebrow.
More importantly, the dish lacked the depth of flavor we were hoping for. It felt under-seasoned, with a noticeable absence of the robust spices that typically define a good tikka masala. For an Indian palate like mine, it simply wasn't flavorful enough. To make matters stranger, the accompanying white chutney, which we assumed to be raita, had a surprising sweetness. While some chutneys can have a hint of sweetness, this one felt more akin to mayonnaise, further throwing off the flavor profile.
It's worth noting that we initially wanted to order tandoori chicken, but the staff informed us it was unavailable. We were happy to try the tikka masala instead, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to the promise of a flavorful Indian meal.
Overall, my experience at Indian Ocean Restaurant was a case of missed potential. The ambiance was lovely, and the service was good. However, for an Indian food enthusiast, the blandness of the main course was a significant disappointment. Perhaps other dishes on the menu might offer a more authentic and flavorful experience. It might be worth giving them another try, but next time, I'll be more specific about my spice preferences...

Called order in, picked it up, drove it back, it was hot and hit the spot. Only suggestions would be less sweetness in the mint sauce and Passenda. I read from other reviewers that the butter chicken was sweet so I avoided it. I personally prefer spicy and my partner is more of a korma but we tried the Passenda to meet in the middle. Wonderful flavour but just a touch sweet for me. The parathas and samosas were also a little undercooked. Finally, the 'red' dipping sauce is amazing and I must have...

Though I'm convinced I was given the wrong dish, the chef and the waiter gave me some feeble explanation it's how it supposed to be. Basically it was thick with coconut, not spicy at all and sweeter than the sweetest dessert. The drinks choices are exhausted by Coke, lemonade and water. Our whatever you want, said the waiter..... Ambience is non existent, like walking into a fridge on arrival, zero decoration and no music. The service was one of the worst I've ever...
