Do not be fooled by the good reviews!
Myself and my partner are Gluten and wheat intolerant. It was a hot day and after reading the glowing reviews we decided to take a trip to this place. Upon arriving it seemed a lovely, quaint and clean restaurant/pub.
We sat ourselves down and had a look at the NGCI menu which means (Non Gluten Containing ingredients menu) All seemed fine, I got to the bar to order our food and the lady who was friendly and polite couldn't use the till to process the order.
I ordered a regular mixed grill and an upgraded mixed grill for £3 which seemed great. The lady brings the starters over which were okay at best.
Then the bar maid comes over and tells me we haven't paid the extra £2.00 for pepper corn sauce which we paid and then she came over again to inform us the sauce isn't gluten free despite it being on the NGCI menu and didn't give us the £2 back which we didn't care about but it was a sign of things to come.
So after all this we were ready to leave, But after spending £40.00+ on 2 meals, starters and a pint each which we thought was great value for money we stayed hoping the mains would be fine, how can you mess up a mixed grill?
My regular mixed grill came and the chips weren't gluten free, I had a mini chicken breast, a cut of stake that was so small it was like it had been cut off with scissors, Sausages which also turned out to be Richmond which aren't gluten free and onion rings which the chef also couldn't confirm were gluten free. But the upgraded mixed grill had huge pieces of meat which my partner offered to me insistently as he couldn't believe the difference in the sizes and cuts of meat.
I'd also like to add that my partner who has been a chef, Bar manager and now works in the hotel industry was completely appalled at the level of incompetence and carelessness shown by the chef and staff. They are severely lucky neither of us had an allergic reaction ... just upset stomachs and a large appetite as we couldn't eat what was served to us for fear of being ill!
There were no apologies offered, No compensation. All the while we could see from the insect littered windowsill the chef chain smoking outside in tracksuit bottoms and a jacket coming in and out of the kitchen . Not once wearing chef whites.
Current Gluten free labeling legislation Regulation EC 41/2009 was published in January 2009 and came into full effect on 1 January 2012, This establishment has clearly violated this law by advertising a NGCI menu yet serving gluten containing foods off the menu which should never contain gluten!

Read moreWaited 40 minutes an undercooked starter (wedges with cheddar and bacon) wedges were hard. A further 30 minutes passed as we waited for our mains. 10oz gammon steak with chips, topped with pineapple, complementarily soaked/saturated in a vinegar like liquid. The chips again were harder than the devils toenails and the egg was dripping in grease! Failed to mention at the start that we ordered to large pepsi's, ended up with tinted soda water... bar staff failed to notice this and continued to serve this. I returned them to the bar and that issue was resolved. The place is relatively clean, but the music played; lets just say its not always for 'before the watershed'. Overall result, not impressed! A place that Marstons brewery should be ashamed of. The left hand doesnt know what the right hand is doing! Massive word of advise, read the reviews on act on the...
